As Aussie has said, if you can easily make new brackets to suit then that would be best way to go.

That said, If I didn't have the tools to hand, I wouldn't go out of my way to do so.

A correctly packed & welded bracket, I my own personal view would be not be a weak point.
Correctly welded suspension brackets are far stronger than the material it is welded to.
