This one has me a little confused myself

I understood that the Sierra's steering shaft is designed to collapse ..... One of the clamping plates on the triangular section is held in place by a shear pin & in the event of a frontal impact, this pin would shear & allow that clamp to slide up the triangular shaft !!??
