fuel pump wiring
few days ago I was asking the location of the fuel pump on my donor Sierra.
Well I found it..... It was under the spare wheel well. Statement.......I hate bl@@dy wiring.... Question.....The pump is huge...( Hang on that's a statement as well ) The wire supplying it seems to be quite heavy. I am using 10 core trailer wire to the back of the car, which is only about .75mm. Can I use 2 of these thin wires to power it, or don't it work like that. Second, not really a lecky question. But does the pump have to lay on it's side, or can It be stood upright? I know it needs to go near the tank, but just cant find a suitable location on its side. Cheers

Hi David
I know my way about auto elictrcal systems but I am in no way an electrical theory whizz kid. I would imagine that you could use two strands of wire. Personally though I would prefer to go through the hassle of feeding a new, heavy gauge wire from the bulkhead & make use of a decent relay. Most external electric pumps I have seen have been laying flat, that said all of the in-tank pumps I have seen are upright Probably both work in different ways. Hopefully someone will come up with decent answer to your questions mate. Probably, I been as much use as an ashtray on a motorbike on this one

dave you can join two but keep in mind if one fails thats a lot of current going down one bit of wire.
does the pump have any info on it. we can look it up and get the specs and go from there. what 10 core wire are you using? if its the vwp stuff then the white core is thicker than all the others and can take 25amps and the rest are 16 amps. 25 amps will be more than enough for a fuel pump as that would equate to a 300watt motor. |

just looked it up 14 amps absolute max.
if you have the vwp 10 core then stick it on the white wire and put a 20amp fuse on it. if you dont have the vwp 10 core then we need to look up the specs and work out if you need 2 wires. |

Hi Guys.
Sorry I didn't get strait back. Just talking to our Jill, God that woman can talk..... Ronnie, thanks....I think.... Yes I will be putting it on a relay anyway. Ash, Yes it's VWP 10 core. I had forgotten the earth was a heavier wire. That should more than cover it. Cheers
