I used 40 x 3 , drilled every 100mm with 3mm holes for pop rivet's ,top and bottom of tunnel.

40mm wide x 3mm thick flat steel strip.

You can also paint your chassis, and fit the strip afterwards with rivets, as Simon (Tatey) did:

Cut some 3mm x 25mm strip this weekend ready to weld in the tunnel - couple of pics on my blog (link in footer)...
