Alternator Bracket
Just looking at the revised alternator bracket design (P82 of the book) compared to the one that came off.
Measuring the 57mm dimension from the top of the plate to the centre axis of the hole, seems to be what my current bracket has. However the 81mm (78+3) from the backplate to the hole centreline in the book, compared to 71mm on my bracket. Can anyone tell me if this the actual intended difference in the bracket? If so it would seem that I could simply fit a spacer to achieve this. I thought the bracket was to lift the alternator up higher, rather than further away from the engine?????

i take it the new bracket is just for the "Pinto" engine ?
as i,ve used the original bracket on my cvh engine tho i must say.... using the original bracket does place the alternator quite close to the side panel. andy

Hi Andy
Yeah, according to the book the bracket is to lift the alternator to clear the steering column when using the Pinto. I will drop Chris a note and see if he can shed any light on the situation.

Hi David,
The dimensions that you have should be fine, as you say the intention is to move the alternator vertically. Incidently don't forget that you'll need a different alternator belt, measure the run using a piece of string and then get a suitable belt from the motor factors - the circumference is marked on the outside of the belt. Cheers Chris
Not sure how well I explained that, but from what I understand, comparing the book design and my current bracket - the difference is not vertically, but moves the alternator further away from the engine, there is no change in vertical position. I've taken some pictures of the bracket off my engine. IF you look at the first pic. You can see that the vertical offset is approx 57mm as per the book. The second pic shows that the distance from the bracket (i.e. engine) to the hole centre is 67, according to the book drawings it should be 81mm - i.e. the vertical offset is correct, but I need to space the alternator a further 14mm away from the engine. Does that seem correct to you Chris?

HI
Went to work in my car yesterday . Got stuck in some traffic and could here a rattling from under the bonnet. Thought I will take a look when I get there. The bolt that holds the adjuster to the alternator had came loos. The alternator had been shaking and cracked the bracket. The alternator was hanging on for dear life must have just made it. So after a long day at work I got to fixing it didn’t get home till after ten PM. Gave it some on the way home though just to make shore I fix it good. Bit off the subject BUT |
