Recomend me a (car) engine

My dream of doing a R1 engined roadster is pretty much squit. It going to be tricky to get it through IVA, tricky to wire, and I just cant find one cheap enough
So, I think im going to go down the route of a car engine, summat like a pinto that can run on carbs, and be turbo'd at a later date if required? Oh, and pre-1995 so that it doesnt need a cat!
So, what are the likely candidates?
