Question DVLA Inspection

I was wondering if it is possible to the the DVLA inspection before you have IVA?

Reason is I made up my own chassis number & I want to get this checked and approved, and set the ball rolling at the DVLA.

Is there a time limit from when you first go to the dvla and have the build up inspection, to when you have IVA done and get the MAC?

I assume I just contact my local office for a info pack with all the relevant forms.

Thanks

Mark

I asked the DVLA the same question.
They told me no, it needs to be (in my case) SVA'd first.
I asked about the chassis number I used.
I told them I was issued with it, not made up.
They checked it on their computer, and said yes thats ok.
Mind you this is the DVLA we are talking about...so who know

They should be able to issue VIN numbers as soon as you start the build, after all they issue them to the major motor manufacturers before a car is built. Its the only identification a car has until it's registered which is what the IVA is about.
I have been through this loop though, " cant have chassis number til after SVA"
"bit I need a chassis number for SVA, can I put my own one on"
"no we have to give you a number"
etc etc.....

Thing is I made a chassis number up, 17 letters/number no i's o's etc etc.
Getting to stage where car is on wheels, engine runs, and was thinking about build up insurance. Don't want the hassle of having to change chassis number with insurance company if the DVLA want to change it.

I did the same by making mine up, then just wrote off to the DVLA and they replied within a week saying that i was fine using it. They said the same to me that i had to SVA before inspection, i wanted to call into inspection on way to SVA but they wouldn't allow it. Apart from that though i found them good to deal with right the way through - DVLA, Stockton-on-tees

Andy,

Do you have the address you wrote to, to have your chassis number checked?

Thanks

i just wrote to my local dvla office telling them what i was up to and asked to have a vin number issued. about a week later an a4 envelope turned up with a letter stating the vin plus all the registration forms.

that was maidstone dvla btw. they seem to know the score but i will hold final judgement until the car is registered on the road

Yea I've never had much problem with Maidstone office.
They always seem reasonable to me.
I took my car in for inspection.
45 min's later walked out with my new reg number and tax disc.
Well done Maidstone DVLA..

I hope that ain't the kiss of death for you Ash..

The same with me, the chassis bo will be allocated once it has been inspected by the DVLA , but this number is allocated to you and will remain under your name till your built is complete.

Hope this helps!

Just spoken to the Guy at Exeter DVLA office who deals with kitcar inspections.

They are accepting the chassis number I made up. Aparently it's all in the first three letters. If the combination is already assigned to a car company then you can't have it. World database apparently!! Sounds impressive.

Anyway, well happy as I had already stamped the number onto the chassis.

Got his direct phone number as well so no need to go through Swansea anymore.

Cheers

Mark
