Default Alternator Bracket

Just looking at the revised alternator bracket design (P82 of the book) compared to the one that came off.

Measuring the 57mm dimension from the top of the plate to the centre axis of the hole, seems to be what my current bracket has. However the 81mm (78+3) from the backplate to the hole centreline in the book, compared to 71mm on my bracket. Can anyone tell me if this the actual intended difference in the bracket? If so it would seem that I could simply fit a spacer to achieve this.

I thought the bracket was to lift the alternator up higher, rather than further away from the engine?????
