Steel quantity
Im looking to price up my steel, just wondering how much i will need for my build. I dont want to buy 10 meters too much of steel as i just wont use it.
i priced up 20mts of 25x25x16swg erw and it was £30+ vat. is this an average price? the book doesnt show a quantity list. Thanks.

depends if you are building the chassis to book spec or to accept the Saturn GRP rear tub, but if its the latter you will need approx 37 mtrs of 25mm box & approx 18mtrs of 19mm ( 20mm is fine ), most builders pay about £110 plus delivery for the above .
You will end up with a little left over of each size, but it comes in handy for making "dummy shocks" etc. hope this helps cheers andy |

No probs, happy to help
Most steel stockists supply the steel in either 6mtr or 7mtr lengths so it may appear that you over order but I assure you, the extra comes in handy ( ) for other bits or for having a few practise welds etc. best wishes for your build cheers andy |

I used up 42 m of 25x25 (a couple of offcuts left, just one of them longer than 50 cm, great as a wrench extension) and 14 m. of 20x20.

Locky....If you are going the Ali tub route, don,t forget the round tube needed
I must admit when I order steel for a chassis kit I order 6x7mtrs of 25mm & 3x7 of 19mm, but I always have steel left over, also the kits go with spare steel so I tend to use what I need when I need it cheers andy |

You can guarantee you will cock up a few times too so a little extra is always nice
We have all been there measure twice cut once realise its wrong measure again cut again etc etc! Especially when you have been cutting compound mitres! |

Wont be using ali tube i dont think.
As for items RP1 and 2 I am going to use a some steel conduit i can get from work for free and alraedy galvanised, plus i have a tube bender up to 25mm tube for work which will come in handy.

Galvanised pipe is nasty stuff to weld and poisonous too with the zinc coating.

Its fine if you grind it off the surrounding area first as its only a thin coating
Flyerncle is quite right though zinc poisoning or galv flu as its known by welders/fabricators is more serious than people give credit for. |
