What are your overall plans for the engine? Are you going to swap it out for a zetec engine later on, or will you just be sticking with the pinto? If its the former, then you may want to hold off spending money on the engine, as it could end up being a bottomless money pit.
I got my hands on a 1.8 CVH which i stripped down and was planning on rebuilding, it wasn't a runner and required at least £150 to get it going with a complete rebuild. I managed to buy a 94 1.8 zetec engine which is a known runner for £40.

At the moment i'm going to stick with the pinto, the engine did run before i removed from the donor.

If the Pinto was running OK when removed from donor then just replace oil and filter, (you've got to drain the sump to mod it anyway) and fit new plugs and leads. set valve clearances and LEAVE IT ALONE!
Go any further and it'll cost big bucks and it ain't worth it! Last time I rebuilt one to fully recon. spec like TT's list, (in 2006) it cost nearly a grand. For a tenth of that you can get a good silver top Zetec which is more powerful straight away. BV. And since you need £1400 for the SRi you won't have big bucks to spend on the Pinto Last edited by Big Vern : 10th May 2010 at 08:08 PM. |

Bolt the engine and box together put the starter in and do a compression check,it will give you some idea of the state of the internal's.

My Usual is..
See if it runs on the garage floor. If yes then fit it , if no buy another. Once in if it seems ok then just use it and see how it goes. TT

£80 wasted when you could have bunged a zetec in for an instant upgrade in power, economy & reliability.
Mate of mine has just sold a zetec with shortened sump and flywheel, clutch etc for £40, I've just picked up a 1999 1.8 zetec for NOWT! LG, Steve |
