CV jont gaitors - sierra drive shafts.
Guys,
question from my mate Stormy who's building a Roadster: How do you change the CV joint boots on th rear drive shafts? He has kits but no idea how to separate the bits to swap them out. It was a 1.8cvh donor, chassis is as per the book, he's just doing the initial fitment of the running gear at the moment. Cheers, Sam.

Disc brake model(taken from haynes manual)
1. Undo or cut the clips that hold the gaitor to the driveshaft, pull the gaitor back from the joint 2. Remove the outer circlip which secures the driveshaft 3. Pull the joint from the driveshaft and remove dished washer(where fitted) and the inner circlip from the shaft 4 The gaitor can now be removed from the shaft 5 clean up components 6 Pack joints with new grease 7 Fit the gaitor and the joint inner cover to the driveshaft then fit the inner circlip and the dished washer(where applicable) 8 Fit the joint, grooves outermost and secure with the outer circlip 9 Secure gaitors with new clips |

Hold it.....!!!!!!
The can's for the shafts are very very difficult to get hold of, it's possible with a lot of work to remove and refit them (thread on LCB) . So don't just rip them appart or you may end up with no way to put them back together. TT

a simple and easy solution is to fit universal strech boots as i did as the crimp on cans are no longer availble

Same here .Leave the joints intact and stretch the new boot over the top.

I stripped my shafts last week, with a little help, removed circlips, cleaned in Jizer, painted and installed new gaitors from Ebay seller redlinecarparts, OE Quality and a perfect fit all Manufactured by Firstline. Total cost around £30 for 4 gaitors. Well worth the effort as it gave a chance to examine the ball joints. Its simple once you know how they are assembled. I marked all the parts with a paint marker so that they went back in the orginal postions.

Right, I'll tell him to have a go at stretching them over. (Do you think that soaking them in boiling water would help, to soften the rubber? Or liberally using washing up liquid on the cans?)

One of these cheapo kits is as good as anything. I was trying to find the red ones that are made from silicone as they live a bit longer.
