Default someone save me the maths. how much metal do I order

hi

just trying to work out price of the metal for my chassis and get quotes.

how much do I need?

book seems to say 1.6mm 25mm box. but what length in total?

has anyone ordered in all of their metal in one hit? do you have your order so I can at least sound like I know what I am ordering

thanks

Hi, I ordered about 37 meters I think it was. But I did not buy the erw as the book suggests, it's much cheaper to buy normal 25mm box section, I asked for a 2mm wall, so that it was a little harder to burn through than the 1.6mm. My box section came in 7.5meter lengths, and cost £54 including vat. If I wanted erw, it was almost £150.

Hi Nick.

ERW = electrically resistant welded CDS = cold drawn steel / seamless.

Hi,
There is a post in the FAQ's about that.
http://www.haynes.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=8123

Worth to have a look at all the FAQ as well as the "Book amendments and extra guides" from the stickys section before starting.

http://www.haynes.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=8459

Good luck with the build

That's because AshG stashed all the important sticky topics into one 'Stickies' thread.

Ha ha, in fact not, he rearranged the saved best bits so they are harder to find. But he did publish his build log in a magazine and later in a booklet:

As standard, ERW tubes come in 6.1m lengths, RHS comes in 7.65m lengths.

Approx cost (trade) for ERW is around £850 per tonne, (or £0.85p per kg)
Approx cost (trade) for RHS is around £620 per tonne, (or £0.62p per kg)

My chassis was 6 lengths 25x25x1.6 ERW and 2 lengths 19x19x1.6 ERW. Should of been around £65 + VAT, but I got it for free
