starter motor: what to do?
Hi,
This summer, my starter motor got stuck very often (annoying, most of the time I had to bag it to restart the engine), so today I decided to remove it and open it for a good clean, as I thought it stuck because of too much dust inside. Well, big surprise, it turned out that there is no dust, but a lot of corrosion inside. Brushes look OK, but I'm afraid the casing is no longer waterproof, and the problem will come back. So what do you think : is it worth de-rusting it, cleaning it properly, and reassemble to re-use it, or is it dead and should I just get a new one ? Thanks. hi , I would opt for replacing it for peace of mind as there is nothing more embarrassing than hitting the key and nothing happens, not a problem at home .... but you just know it isn't going to let you down there but somewhere really inconveniant

I had a slipping non-return clutch in the starter, so so I asked a fellow builder/mechanic about parts for starter motors. He said he does not bother fixing them himself, and just pointed me to a shop that rebuilds alternators and starters. I took the starter to that shop and after about 2 hours had it back. They replaced the brushes, too, for the total sum of €40 or so. Perhaps look for a specialist shop in your parts.

I took my starter and alternator to a local truck repair shop, they bench tested both units and replace bearing and brushes where need for £30 a piece.

Thanks for the answers ans the tips, very useful. The starter is now at a specialized repair shop for examination. They will come back to me with a price after the holidays.
Thanks. Merry Christmas to all!
