Default LT77 4wd->2wd

Hi all,
I'm taking the 3.5v8 out of a landrover to use for my engine. The LT77 gearbox that came out is obviously a 4wd box, but I know there is a 2wd version of the LT77.

So, my question is: Does anyone know if they are completely different beasts, or if there's some kind of parts kit to convert one to the other? I've tried googling around but I can't find any definitive information.

Cheers,
KEv.

You need to unbolt the transfer case then bolt on the 2wd cover. Finding one may be a pita though.

If you don't want the current set up I'll have it for my little 4x4 beastie

Kev,

As above (double post)

Now don’t take me as a complete authority on this but….

The LT77 gearbox uses a transfer box to create the 4WD, if you remove the transfer box you have a one out put gearbox.

I am going to go and lay under a Land Rover to check the gear leaver attaches to the gearbox not the transfer box!

Cheers Ginge

Oh welcome, (good first question both my passions in one post)

Right I have just crawled out from under a Land Rover, I could only find an ambulance!

As Coozer said really, or you could leave the transfer box on stick the diff lock in and have the widest transmission tunnel ever but a prop shaft that is about 20mm long.

Best search for a 2WD cover!

Welcome Rincewind, are you a Wizzard by any chance? I don't know much about landys other than they're uncomfortable animals but great off road, good job Ginge and Coozer have answered your question.

I have been thinking a little more about this. (No comments you lot).

My first 90 had an LT77 and was screaming in fifth at 60mph the later R380 is a little better, has reverse in the right place as well.

I know the diff has the final say in the road wheel output speed but it might be worth thinking about.

Someone must make a rover V8 to type 9 conversion plate, and then you won’t have to mess around modifying the transmission tunnel.

Just thinking out loud.

Cheers Ginge

I have seen a couple of rover v8 to type 9 bellhousings either on ebay or the v8 forum but they arnt cheep. I have also been told by several people not to go down that route because the type 9 wont be able to handle all the extra torque!

In the end i have decided to go with a lt77 gearbox from a tr7 as the 5th gear is taller and is actually an overdrive gear. cheap too, only cost £47 for the gearbox and it bolts onto the sd1 bellhousing with no problems.

im not 100 % sure about that gearbox, im sure someone who knows more about gearboxes will have a look soon. The only thing i would say is that bell housing wont fit on the v8. As far as i am aware you also wont be able to use a 4wd bellhousing because they are too long......

Thanks for all the replies, guys.

It looks like the short answer is, no I can't do an (easy/fairly cheap) conversion - it''ll be much easier to sell this box and get another one - the Borg Warner T5 seems to be a fairly popular choice for this engine.

So Coozer, if you want to make me an offer for the gearbox (with or without transfer box), PM me
