Default Zetec flywheel

Just removed the flywheel from our Zetec in order to fit a torque converter and we found an electronic sensor behind the flywheel.

Can anybody tell me is this just to fire the rev counter or is it some complicated part of the injection system?

That's the crank position sensor. You won't get a spark without that.

This is the crank sensor for the ignition system. It also gives a speed signal to the fuel injection system. They may be different auto to manual so you'll need to check the part numbers at your local ford dealer

The same way as it does on a manual I'd say. The crank position sensor is linked to the ECU to control spark or spark and fuel on a fuel injected engine. I don't believe it will have any other effect on an auto. You just need to be sure the pick up point on the torque converter is at the same point as it was on the flywheel. If not you can always mount a trigger wheel and sensor to the front bottom pulley. You can do a search on fitting megajolts or megasquirts to get some ideas .
