Question EDIS 4 module

Hi folks.

Today. I have been mainly soldering again.

This time I have built a Megajolt unit for my lads project.

The surface mount components were a lot easier to solder than I thought they were going to be. Sooo tiny.

I am now looking for the source of an EDIS 4 module.

The one I took from my 1.8 Escort Zetec donor (1994 car ) was mounted on the nearside inner wing. However I have been unable to find another at the breakers.

The Escort Zetecs I am finding are newer & look to be complete, no sign of an EDIS module though.

Have Ford located them in a different place or is it that Ford has done away with them & are now running the coil pack direct from the ECU

Has any one got any idea as to what car to be looking out for & location of the EDIS unit.

The EDIS comes up on ebay from time to time.
When you get one mount it in side the cockpit not the engine bay, our engine bays get hotter than Fords and the EDIS is vunerable to excess heat.
MegaJolt is best mounted close to the EDIS and on some sort of shock mount to lessen the vibration.

Default Assembled Megajolt unit

Heres a pic of the Megajolt unit that was built this afternoon.



This was bought direct from Autosportlabs in the states.

Quick delivery & lots of info on their web site.

A lot quicker to build than the Megasquirt. Although the surface mounted components are tiny.

Hi Ronnie

Looking good there. As I see you're playing with both the 'jolt and the 'squirt, I was wondering if you knew the answer to a question I have. Can you run the megasquirt as an igntion only controller (i.e. the same as the megajolt). It seems to me that the prices aren't that different, but it would be an very cost effective upgrade solution to simply by a megasquirt, run it like a megajolt, then when you want to go for the full monty, just add injector and wiring.

Hi David

Yes I beleive you can use the Megasquirt for spark only. There are a few options available to suit just about any budget.

Number Two son, has visions of fitting bike carbs to his spare Vauxhall Calibra XEV engine.

Hmm I see a plan forming - dam stop it David, build the car first! I've been involved in injecting two previous engines, allthough we had the luxury of a Motec M400 to play with. Even thought we had over £1k of ECU to play with it's amazing how simple things like a poor connection in the loom can cause all manner of troubles - been there, done it, spent 54 hours with out sleep trying to find the problem!

Unhappy Faulty connections

Yes, faulty connections can be a real problem to detect. Even more so when they are of an intermitent nature.

Having worked on a fair bit of marine electrics. I have over the years learnt to carefully solder each joint or connection & then seal with heat shrink tubing wherever possible.

If I am in one of my anal moods, i'll do a continuity test as well .

Just completed the instalation of a complete V3 system after discovering some loom problems on my V2.
Built up a complete system on a board in the Utility room (with the Pinto race head on the chopping board next to the ironing) checked all the wiring several times and used shielded twin core properly earthed (unlike the original loom) then spent 2 days carefully wiring it in to the car, separate fuses and power supply, soldered and heat shrunk, replacement EDIS and Coil pack.
I am sooo hoping that my cutting out problem has been solved.
