radiator position. help!
Hi guys?
Just wondering has anybody put their radiator between the front frame and the engiine? I have a polo rad and i havent got my nosecone yet. I find when i try position it on the front frame that the outlets get cought in the frame. If it was out here then the the fan ends up being bout 1 inch from te front of the engine at the top and theres plenty room on the bottom. It fits fairly well there but my only worry it that it wouldnt cool properly as its at an angle and away from the front? There wont be anything else in front of the rad. I fitted the same radiator in front of the chassis no problems. Having it out the way did leave loads more space for maintenance and to fit my header tank in. I'll dig out a photo when I'm home.

I too fitted the Polo rad on my car, it is fitted forward of the front frame & like you say the bottom hose is a snug fit but does go,my fan is attached to the rad between the rad & front frame & fitted so the upper hose is above the top of the front frame & still leaves plenty of clearance between the top of the rad & the nose cone .
Creates plenty of space between the rad & front of the engine, tho i must admit I,ve fitted my expansion tank on the Scuttle bulkhead to get it as high as possible . cheers andy

Hi andy,
How high have you the rad sitting at? and how far out? When i sit it so that the bottom outlet is inside the frame, its about 7 inches high? also, what have you done about the third outlet on the rad as it only has 2 but as far as i no i need 3? i was thinkin of making an outlet using an old fan thermostat thats in the rad? Many thanks for your help, Darryl. |

I'm going to be using the same rad and route mine like this http://www.haynes.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=6873. I was wondering though if the thermostat could be used as it would make my bike carb conversion easier as I wouldn't need to knock core plugs out and mount a 1.6 cvh thermostat?

I dont think dares any reason why you couldn't use the thermostat in the rad!
Only as far as I know, you need 3 outlets on the rad for header tank/inlet/outlet. |

Well I was just going to put a 2nd T piece in the bottom hose and connect the header tank into that as recommended by robo. Does anyone know if it's a simple as getting the connector off a polo loom for the thermostat and replacing the sierra one with it? I had a look and the sierra one has 4 wires coming out it.

It is possible to fit the rad just in front of the engine inside the engine bay but it depends on rad size.

im using a polo rad i have mounted mine in front of the front frame but ive made some quite mad bracketry for it all to fit as ive used the rad fan from my omega donor and luckily the thermostat from my donor also fitted straight onto the polo rad
it is a bit tight but possible to get a decent clearance for the hoses havent got any picture tho
