Right - let me try again and explain my query - I have now doen a drawing of the book bracket and the one that came off my engine. As you can see on the left I have overlayed the two, and while the mounting hole is moved away from the engine, there is little vertical change (note that this view is actually at 90 degress to when it is mounted in the car). Have I got a special bracket???

That doesn't seem to be a standard Pinto alternator bracket.

The extra distance outward wont make a difference, it'll be taken up by the adjustment of the belt, but the standard Pinto bracket would have the "outside" hole about 26mm lower down.

It would be interesting to find out what it's from as it neatly solves the alternator/steering column problem.

Hmmm - that is interesting. Explains my confusion. This is the bracket that came straight off my 1987 1.8 GL engined Pinto. Here are a couple of pics below of how it looks on the engine -
