Bruce I had a measure up of the getrag 265 and a t5 manual 5 speed box and input shaft centerline to the lowest part of the box is around 5" - 61/2". V8 yank flywheels are about 13" to 14" in diameter, bmw is probably somewhere near the same so you dont want the sump to be much lower than around 6" below the crank centerline. It all needs to go as low as poss without tearing lumps out of it over speed humps so reckon on an inch of sump under the car as a max and that will put the lowest part of the box under the car the same as the engine.

Hi Bob, sorry I've not got round to replying yet, I've been a little sidetracked trying to get the plasma cutter running with the new torch. It was a doddle to fit but it still doesn't work, I cant get the HF pilot to fire and as I need to get the shell cut up and weighed in to recover some cash for the mig I've had to resort to the angry grinders

I've not taken a measurement of the auto box from centre flywheel to bottom of bell housing yet but you were spot on with the flywheel which is 13 1/8". Also from centre flywheel to bottom of oil pickup is 8" which means prob + 1" ish for sump clearance, might get away with it if I put tractor wheels on! so have resigned myself that a dry sump is the only feasible option.

I wasn't keen at first partly due to cost and partly because although I new what a dry sump system was I wasn't too familiar with them. I feel better about it now as I've managed to find some useful info about them and I don't see any reason that with enough time, more research and practice with the tig I couldn't do my own sump and possibly even the tank, with regards to a pump I think for my needs a 3 stage would be more than enough, 2 scavenge, 1 pressure. The M60 already has an external filter housing so should lend itself quite nicely, although as the feed/exit pass through the current sump I'd have to look at a suitable oil entry.

I've seen that link you put up in my searches, very sweet looking sumps but no prices!

I found another dedicated kit, in the states again, but at just under $4k for the kit and sump its waaaaaay out my league:

Its going to have to be research, research, more research, DIY & Fleebay

When I get a few spare mins I'l get the crane out again and try the lump in the frame with no sump/alternator and see how it looks, and I'l post the piccies up.

Bruce

Best place for a pump is the ebay autos site. loads of bargains on ex nascar stuff. You will get all you need bar the sump for around £300

That sump from vac sport looks like something that could be knocked up at home without too much grief.

I'm hoping so Bob, the base of the block should lend itself nicely, symetrical and OTT on the fixings so I'm looking forward to having a go at that bit.

I'l probably have a trial go first out of steel then post it up here for a general dose of constructive criticism

Pumps seem to be coming up now and again so hopefully I should be ok if I manage to pick a good one.

A gearbox came up today but I thinks he's a bit optimistic on his price tho
