Default Anyone made their own Airbox?

As the title says - anyone had a go at making one? I'm going to be running respaced bike carbs so was thinking of using a sausage filter but every time I look at the prices I start to come out in a cold sweat!

Looking around the net - universal cone filters seem plentiful and cheap. Having done my bodywork in Alu, I've got a reasonable bit of spare sheet lying around so was thinking of having a go at making one.

The idea in my mind is to bend a bit of sheet over some largish radius pipe. Then fold the bottom edges back like a return bend to make flanges to bolt to the baseplate. For either end a set of endplates, with flanges formed around the edge could be riveted and sikaflexed to complete the box. As the carb trumpets are assembled through the baseplate the two halves would need to be bolted together - but I've done this before on fibrglass and CF airboxes. Finally to get the air into the box I was thinking I could sikaflex in something like this - http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=17602

What do you reckon - am I mad?

I toyed with this idea when i saw the price of the sausage filters too

But after talking to my local tuning company he reckoned that no matter how well i made it it would produce less power than with a sausage filter because of the restriction it would cause, it wouldnt be much, but a restriction all the same.

So i went for a sausage in the end as i need all the power i can get as im only using a humble cvh! until this winter that is

Be careful with the cheap cone filters though if you go down that route, some of them are very restrictive and some are the opposite and let dirt through!

I made a box out of the sides of an old washing machine.

On the rolling road it gradually got removed until max power came with it off!
