Zetec flywheel
Just removed the flywheel from our Zetec in order to fit a torque converter and we found an electronic sensor behind the flywheel.
Can anybody tell me is this just to fire the rev counter or is it some complicated part of the injection system?

That's the crank position sensor. You won't get a spark without that.

This is the crank sensor for the ignition system. It also gives a speed signal to the fuel injection system. They may be different auto to manual so you'll need to check the part numbers at your local ford dealer
