gear box
first id like to say hi to everyone on the forum ive been reading the forums for a while now and ive decided to start the build so far ive got a welder and some steel
my first question is is this gearbox suitable? http://i.ebayimg.com/13/!BVVkezw!2k~$(KGrHgoH-CUEjlLlvzuyBKR-UhZNUQ~~_12.JPG its from a 1992 2 litre efi engine in the description it says : The gearbox has an extension and is suitable for kitcar build many thanks Andy |

It looks like a MT75 gearbox. Its bellhousing is wider than Type 9, so the chassis needs to be modified to accomodate it. The plans for the changes to the chassis were available on this forum before The Big Hack, supposedly someone will repost them at some point.
The upsides of MT75 against Type 9 are: a newer design, able to handle a bit more torque, perhaps somewhat lighter as well with all-ally case construction. |

in my opinion I wouldnt go for either
i was going to use the mt75 box that came with my donor so built my chassis to take it then i realised that there will be probs with the propshft so at that point I weighed it and weighed the type 9 i have(with rs bellhousing found the mt to be a fair bit heavier so im now usig the type 9 also when i took the g/box off the back of the 2.0 dohc engine i saw the horrific flywheel it must weigh a ton on its own also its either a change to carb or modify/make your owm plenum. so im using the 2.1 pinto that ive had at the back of my garage for ages if you decide to use the aforementioned it is possible but a lot more work there is someone on here doing it but it is a headache if you want a mt75 and a 2.0 dohc with loom and ecu you can have mine for a small price. thanks for the info i was lead to believe that the pinto was heavier and less powerfull than the dohc engine
my budget and availability might have to go for the more work dohc ant mt75 option but im still looking for a doner car and still open to suggestions thanks again Andy. |

I prefer the Type 9 box, usualy has better ratios than the MT75, the V6 box is better on both with the Type 9 easier to fit but still a bit of work.
The DOHC engine is the least popular of the Ford range however if you do fit it then a swap to Zetec in the future is a simple swap. The DOHC and the Zetec have induction on the right exhaust on the left. The Pinto is easy to tune to 130bhp, injection head, a 285 (FR32) cam and some bike carbs. The rods are the week link so a 205 block from an injection engine will get you the best rods 7500 rpm and the best head (better induction short side turn) worth 10 bhp on its own. A Felpro gasket gives you 9.7 to 1 compression for £37 and your only real expense is a cam kit and carbs, Oh and a Vernier cam pully. I got a RL2 cam and Vernier pulley for £30 at a swap meet. |
