Default VIN Number - making one up

I should get on and apply for my VIN number soon and was thinking of applying for my own mumber. Is it just the case of having 17 digits in any combination of numbers and letters - or does it need to be in a specific format?

Also, has anyone got any examples of where and how they have applied the number to their car?

I belive it can be anything not already allocated, if you have a local DVLA office then it may be worth popping in for a chat.

I phoned my local DVLA office (Bournemouth) really good chap there told me that they are now issuing random vin numbers. He then sent me a load of forms and a random vin to stamp on the car. He said something about EU regulations not allowing them to issue (home made vins) or something anyhow it might change from office to office. This was a back in June. No harm in giving them a bell!
