Default plugs and distributor

pinto engine 2lt which plugs correspond with the distributor, there is a 3 marked on the dist cap in the inside but that is as far as i can see,took out the plugs and turned by hand and 1and 4 came up at the same time and then 2 and 3 came up next,I have made the easy one first no 3 on the distri,but where to attach the plug to not sure

Take cam cover off.

Turn engine so No 1 cylinder's inlet ( passenger side ) valve is closing.

make sure timing mark is at TDC,

Rotor arm should now be pointing at plug #1

then 3, 4 ,2

I thought Fords went 1,2,4,3.

easy way to tell on any engine type or config of cyl is to check cam or rockers and look for what cyl has both valves closed at that cyl tdc.
that cyl is at the start of its power stroke. now turn crank in correct directon to find next cyl and so on till your back at the start cyl.
all 4 std cyl inlines will be 1-3-4-2 or 1-2-4-3
