Hi Tricky,

You've probably done all this but FWIW.

Check plugs leads are on in the right order and firing at the right time.

Check cam timing, if the heads been off before it may be out - worth a check.

One cylinder low on comp. won't make it a smooth runner but it shouldn't be spitting back through the carb unless you have a very burnt valve - you would have noticed when you inspected it when the head was off! Check valve clearances - you could have a valve being kept open - especially as no.5 valve is tricky to adjust with the carb on.

Carb rebuild kit suggests you've stripped the carb. Now it won't take load without spitting and coughing through the carb. Hmmmm? What did you do to the carb? did you get the mixture screws, jets etc all back in EXACTLY the right places?

For me your problem sounds like fuel mixture or cam timing as you say it doesn't seem too bad if you try to pull away gently.

Try to get to the bottom of these problems first before stripping the head off again or you could just spend money and it still don't run when you get it back together.

HTH BV.
