The couplings on the MX5 are bigger than those on the Escort rack so I guess I need the lower coupling from the escort to mate to the MX5 mid section, welding it into the column extension is that right?
Would MK4 Fiesta coupling fit the Escort rack, I would have thought that the steeing rack spline is fairly universal in the Ford range?

The guide says,
Steering column can be extended to meet the Escort Mk2 rack with a length of tube similar to sierra with a Sierra column coupling and Sierra column shaft, RD849, RD850 available from Rally Designs.
That didnt make sense to me because the RD850 part has the Sierra triangular fitting on it.
I've ended up ordering RD849 - STEERING COLUMN SHAFT and RD820F - Group 4 Coupling - Forged Steel from Rally design and I can weld the steering column shaft directly into the shaft extension tube to connect it upto the MX5 column. :)

If it helps I extended my MX5 column to do away with the extra larger UJ.
I bought 2 steering shafts from Rally design. 1 I cut and sleeved with 20mm thick wall CDS to make the lower shaft. The other I used to extend the MX5 shaft. This was done by a local machine shop. They drilled and threaded the mx5 column, then threaded the shaft and screwed it into the MX5 shaft then tigged it.
