Oil breather hose.

Hi,
Then engine I use (2.0i DOCH from a Sierra) had a direct induction kit fitted on it (big conical air filter) when I bought my donor. It is OK for me to keep it, and I will.

But the oil breather hose (connected at one end to the plastic camshaft cover), isn't connected to anything at the other end. Originally, it is connected to the air filter box, which has been removed by the previous owner to fit the direct induction kit.

What can I do with this other end? I don't really want to leave it open like that.

Most people I have seen use an oil catch can with an small cone air filter to allow the engine to breath.

Wot e said /\ Syl or you could just put a little cone filter on the end, as long as the engine can breathe you can put anything on the end

The positive crankcase ventilation system is sucking the filtered air through the breather in the valve cover. The air then mixes with the crankcase gases and is scavenged through the PCV valve by the intake vacuum.

Keep the PCV valve connected to the intake.

Thank you Albertas for the technical explanations, very instructive. I was not sure what a PCV valve was in English, but again, Wikipedia was here :)

Here is a picture of the small breather filter i installed. It is attached to a piece of Gates oil hose. Hope this will be OK. If it is vibrating too much when the engine is running, I can put a longer piece of hose and attach it to the block with a P-clip. We'll see when I start the engine (hopefully this month)

There is a possibilty of a smell of oil blowing back on you if placed that high up,it may help if you use some wire wool to stop oil coming directly up the pipe.

Thanks for the tip, that is what I'm gonna do. Or may be move the filter using a longer hose. I need to see all the things which will take place in the engine bay, and adapt to it according to the room left. Almost there ! :)
