Help needed

Hi guys how are you all?

Ok so I'm ready to start my build and hit a snag already been pricing my metal for the chassis and its going to cost nearly 300 delivered from my local metal suppliers is this correct? I have seen guys on here paying less then 100!!
Just think they are trying to rip me off already!

What have you priced up for just the box section if so then yes it is expensive.
Have you asked about the ally aswell ok it would still be expensive but noy as bad

I asked for 25 x 25 erw 6100 in length 19 x 19 erw 6100 length and that was it £28 a length then £50 to deliver cos they won't cut it well I say they won't they will for £25!

I also asked for shs to see if that was cheaper it would of been 2mm wall but that worked out more expensive!

You can get a pre cut chassis pack for less than that. Pm phil at Talon, I am sure he can sort you out, and it saves a load of haste cutting all of those angles !:eek:

I got all my steel from IS&G Steel Stockholders, can't remember exactly how much but it came in under £100. I had to drive over there with my hacksaw and cut the 6m lengths in half, then straped the lot on the roof.

They have a branch in Ipswich, about 54 miles from Great Yarmouth.

Got all mine delivered for about 140 including postage. Was around 12 a langth, for ERW though.

Flat pack might well be the way to go, I chose (like a great muppet :D ) to do it all myself so I could say... "made it all myself!"

flat pack is the future unless you have the ability to cut all the angles accurately. Surprising how long it takes to get the chassis together even when all the steel has been cut for you.

Cutting angles accurately is nothing special. While a bandsaw would help, sufficiently accurate cuts are easy to make with a metal chop saw or even a hacksaw. If you get it wrong, you can tweak it with a flap disk or a file. If it's unsalvageable, you set it aside and make another one. Chances are, soon you'll soon cut it up for shorter tubes.

I have done all mine with a hacksaw, those mitre cuts are a pig ! Should have bought a chop saw, but by the time you buy your steel & a chop saw, it's cheaper to buy the pre cut pack. :D

Thanks for all the info guys but although I have a metal chop saw and sure it wouldn't be an issue I have spoken to phil @ talon and buying a flat pack kit from him! Just makes sense and may save me a little time as after donnington this weekend I'm full of enthusiasm and excited to get on with it now I have doner and workshop all sorted after 5 months!!

I cut all mine with a hacksaw and a vice mounted on a wonky workmate :eek: ! (I made extra-sure that my chassis is nice and square don't worry!)

Not the easiest way (probably the hardest way in fact) but it is do-able.

Forest metals on ebay do 25x25 for under £6 for a 3 metre length.
I found a local supplier that does it for about a fiver.
I would agree with all the other posters that a flat pack is the way to go, that's what I did on my first build. You may be able to buy the steel cheaper but at the end you will most likely spend what you save on a saw and mis cuts.

I can second this. Very satisfying to do once, but costly on cutting discs and causes a bit of wrist strain. Definately flat-pack if I do it again (barely started on this one yet!)

Glad to hear you've a kit on the way, you'll soon be sitting in a frame going "Brum Brum..."

I waited til I had the steering wheel frame in place, test fitted the wheel and then used it as an excuse.

"I've got to sit here turning it, how will I know it works otherwise?"

The fact I was there for a good minutes was purely to be thorough :D

I think that is a well known 'coming of age' moment for any roadster builder..... I defy anyone to say they haven't done it!

So update guys!!
Yesterday me and my boy jumped in the car and drive 2 hrs to collect my chassis flat pack from phil at talonmotorsport what a nice guy drove back home and eager to start this weekend!
