This may have been covered but I cant find anything anywhere..... is there a reason that most people drill and mount the mounting bolts in the cross bar rather than using the book spec mounting plates etc?

Just looking at it and wondered......

Cheers

The mounting plates are for seat belts. Harnesses must come directly over the shoulders. It would not be acceptable to have a harness cross your body at a 45 degree angle. :D

If you have the means to make a clean 19-20mm hole through round tube and keep them all in line with each other then it just saves some work. I would not be happy to trust the single book plates on their own I would suggest using one top and bottom but that's just me.

In my case I just thought it looked neater going through the crossbar, and it was less effort drilling holes than making up plates :)

Cheers guys, I only ask because I had the plates supplied when I bought the roll bar etc. Will have a bit of a look and make a decision

The IVA manual states (Sect. 19 annex 3):

Threaded bushes should be welded (at both ends) through the tube, and not end mounted on the surface. (A threaded bush may be attached by
its side surface to a structural component).

I read this as: hole in the tube is preferred, side mounting with a gusset -- acceptable.

That's exactly the same reason that i did mine like that. After doing it like the book, I thought it was ugly. That cross bar is in the scrap bin.

get a set of 4 roll cage inserts with the unf thread on inside and weld thease into holes that are drilled all the way trough the centre of cross bar tube

you mast have it welded all the way round and stickking out both ends and have a threaded hole all the way through to keep the iva man happy

Cheers guys. I already have the threaded inserts but was just looking at all the options before making a decision
