MX5 headlight circuit......

Can anyone explain this circuit, It's seems incredibly complicated. The headlight relay has a diode in it and I've never understood dim dip resistor packs. I know what a resistor is but I don't understand why headlights need a resistor when they have two filaments and circuit for dip and dip.

I can just transplant this circuit into my car but I like to know how stuff works incise things go wrong or it fails.

Do I just get rid of everything after the meter fuse on this circuit?
