Tiptronic

Now having built my first roadster I am thinking of a second and I find myself leaning toward an auto and must have tiptronic (or other synonyms) so I can build wireless paddles into the steering wheel, anybody have any thoughts on this subject ?

The very best of luck with that! I have great respect for any body that understands how to join all the electronics together to make things work.

Actually Phil..its a lot easier than you think, my guess is that most tiptronics work via an electrical signal through a switch.... replace that switch with a car alarm zapper and module with relays (relays act as switch near gearselector) zapper switches resoldered to be activated by paddles hey presto paddle system... it is finding the right eng/gearbox combo to work with ie audi (hard) or bimmer (easy I think) as long as you keep all associated looms ecu's etc I see no reason why it would not be fairly straight forward

There is usually an ECU that controls the auto box and tells it what gear to be in on modern autos. You would simply need to make a replacement for this... Bet Skov could help. ;)

you would need a transmition controller and its not as easy as you may think

Donor engine/box from Merc/BMW all have flappy wotsits and inline RWD as well, kompressor engines chuck out decent gee gee's in a little package.

I always thought that flappy paddle would be a great addition to a roadster, methinks it has to be all beemer as they have been at it a long time and it makes sense as a full roadster donor . All the running gear has been used with no issues in various builds , its all down to picking through the electrickery. :) I am watching with interest .

Beemers do have issues with cotrol unit on g/box as it is a manual box with servo unit to change gears and operate clutch,they are very expensive.
