Hi All
I was having a look on the forum for a list of steel required to build an mx5 roadster
I want to fabricate everything myself
So i was just wondering if there is a comprehensive list of the steel required and quantities

I was looking at that but it just has the box section measurements none of the other steel i need.
Like what plate steel i need and the steel required for the wishbones

I bought all my own steel and faced the ends with a mill. Despite this making life a lot easier if I were to do it again I would go for a chassis kit. 10 times quicker and easier and only marginally more expensive than buying raw steel.

If you are determined to do every thing your self with an angle grinder (life is way to short for that by the way) then get a 2ft/600mm square of 3mm semi bright mild sheet and 1000mm of 50x5mm flat black this will cover the basic chassis...or if like many others you want wheels on your wagon before the apocalypse just buy a pre cut chassis plate kit, saves time you won't hurt your self every body has a good time,yay.

Wishbone material as a minimum for the lowers should be 25x2mm or 1" 14 gauge ERW comes in 5mtr lengths, buy 2 you will cock it up at some point (don't bother with CDS it is 3 times the price and you won't get much benefit from it) upper wishbones 20x2mm or 3/4" 14 gauge again comes in 5mtrs you'll need just the one, Mrs Wembley? (ask your Mum)

First off i dont intend to hurt myself with the grinder ive been using a grinder almost daily for the last 15 years and no damage so far touch wood.
I also enjoy fabricating things from scratch.
Plus im in ireland so shipping will possibly be a problem.
Do you ship to ireland and what is the cost.
As for mrs wembley im lost.

if you want to do it your self, go for it, so much better sense of achievement once its finished, the steel box section shouldn't cost you more than around £100 as apposed to £350 for a kit, two days and you will have what looks like a chassis too,

as for the flat plates, cutting by hand is a nightmare, if you have a local laser cutters, go down and see if they will cut your bits out for you, also handy for other brackets you may need in the future, if you get the bulk cut in one go you should get a nice price

Its just that i want to order the steel and its 50 euro for delivery so want to order everythin at once just in case i cant find a cost effective method id rather have the steel there and if i dont use it ill find some other ise for it.

All types of people are building these cars usually in a single garage and not every body has such understanding neighbours.
Don't use the book jigs as they are not the best instead make simple box section rectangle frames and clamp the bush tubes in place with 20x20 box section and G clamps. This way you cut the tubes to the correct length and trail fit each one and know it's square, also means you can pick it up to weld the other side with out unclamping it.

I've shipped wishbones,chassis plates,brackets to Australia ,France,Germany,Sweden,Spain,USA it just depends on whether you want to pay the shipping, the furthest a chassis has travelled is Madrid via Shipley £250.
A full set of wishbones to ROI is £20 and that weighs 15kg in a box 18" square.

So im having trouble locating bright steel in a suitable size over here in ireland. So im just wondering is it ok to use normal box section i know its not as nice to work with but are there any other reasons i should or shouldnt use it
