View Full Version : Big day
HandyAndy
20th June 2009, 09:45 PM
please accept my apologies for this thread but just had to tell someone that my chassis ( rolling ), with steering & full suspension fitted will see daylight for the very first time tomorrow, i,m like a big kid with the excitement of it all :o :D .
the chassis will be taken out of the garage so that i can have a mega tidy up & dismantle the build table, you won,t believe how much stuff (Roadster related ) is stored under the table, so need to clear the space for the chassis to be rolled back into the garage backwards so that i,ve got the engine end at up over garge door end to aid when need to fit engine, tho thats a while off yet.
sorry for boring you to sleep but its a big day for me & my build.
hopefully photos will be posted tomorrow evening on the forum.
i hope the weather is kind to me :D
cheers

Thanks Adrian,
yes i,ll be glad when engine goes in, as sick of banging my head on it  :D , its in a cradle stand so its about 3 ft from the ground & i,m always banging into it, does this sound familiar to anyone ? :D
tho my chassis is rolling, its far from ready for fitting out, as i,m basically fitting everything that is needed to put it on its wheels , to check every thing fits etc then it,ll be stripdown time for chassis painting,
i,ve also still got some brackets to weld on yet, headlight brackets/ rad / brake line etc
tomorrow is basically the first stage of rolling chassis.
i,ll take lots of photos for my build log
i,d love to know what the first thing the neighbours say to themselves.... "what the bloody ell is that????" :D springs to mind.

Thanks Ronnie,
myself & Turboporscheandy (thanks mate ) had just seconds before got my chassis off the build table & then Spud69 turns up :D it was perfect timing, we had all sorts of neighbours coming out of their houses to see what was going on
to see mine alongside Spuds thinking that one day mine might look half as good is a very nice feeling & really spurs me on with my build,
i think the neighbours finally understand why i,ve been in the garage for the last 11 weeks with the angry grinder, me shouting at the mig etc, seeing all sorts of bits going into the garage & now they see this

Nice Looking chassis andy.
Just noticed that you still have the diagonal brace in the engine bay infront of the steering column. If you are using the cvh engine I found that this brace gets in the way of the inlet manifold. Have a look at the attached pic to show what I did.
Cheers

22nd June 2009, 12:15 PM
yes thanks Mark, i got that part of the chassis welded in before i,d read the post about making it difficult to place the engine in :o , but then thought i,d leave it in until i,d completely finished the chassis to ensure it stayed true, so yes that bit will be coming out soon as will the bottom rail where the gearbox goes.
thanks for your kind words on my chassis, it actually feels like i,m building a car now instead of a steel jigsaw :D :D

Hi Andy,
I know I have been pre-occupied sorting my career over the last few weeks so have not really been around to share all of your "Big Day" but rest assured. I know how important this day was, same as my first day of rolling chassis. Its great to see all the bits from the show finally in place.
My big day is coming up soon, as I have a few weeks Gardening leave from the Construction Industry. I have decided to try to shoehorn that V6 into the chassis. Will keep you informed....
So far I have a mobile scaffold tower split into 2 towers, and an RSJ to make a "make shirt engine hoist" Just need the lifting tackle now!
WELL DONE BUDDY!

25th June 2009, 08:27 PM
Cheers mate, yeah it was a good feeling getting the chassis out of the cramped garage for the first time  tho the clean up of the garage wasn,t so enjoyable , angle grinding dust gets everywhere  :D
good luck getting the V6 into such a small space, i was measuring my gearbox & engine today for readiness for trial fitting, but thats only a small 4cylinder, nothing like your V6

little bit of progress report...............
engine & gearbox are in :D :D
was quite surprised how much the front of the car dropped when i took the tension off the engine hoist
checked ride height clearance = 5inches from tarmac to bottom of the lower chassis rails close to the footwells,
also the only part that is lower than the chassis rail is 25mm of the gearbox bellhousing, does that sound about right?
felt good seeing the engine in the chassis :)

Well done mate, good progress there! Ground clearance sounds about perfect, that's what I'm aiming for. As long as nothing will hit the floor when you have a puncture using your chosen wheel/tyre combination, everything should be fine.
Cheers and well done
Adrian
HandyAndy
14th July 2009, 07:44 PM
Thanks Adrian, must admit i hadn,t thought of the puncture scenario:eek:
looking at the chassis, if i have a puncture then i still think the respective wheel would hold the chassis off the tarmac,

:D i must admit :o its had a bit of a clean up, tho i,m not kidding myself , i know there is still ALOT of work to be done, but yes it feels good seeing the engine in place.
here,s a side photo showing the clearance, the only bit below the chassis rails is the bottom of the bell housing, i,ve used a shortened Zetec sump.
http://i625.photobucket.com/albums/tt335/handyandy_photo/Haynes%20Roadster/kitcar274.jpg
even tho the engine clears the bottom rails of the chassis there is still clearance above the oil filler cap to the bonnet.

Well she's rollin rollin rollin. I thought I to would be posting a couple of pics today of my rolling chassis. Stayed out in the garage last night to the wee small hours and was mega chuffed to have reached this mile stone and couldn't wait to shout about it until .............. my wife and youngest daughter where in a three car accident this morning. Everyone ok but when I arrived there where four ambulances, lady on spinal board etc and was quite scary. Of course she was the last car and will have to take a large portion of the blame for not leaving enough distance to be able to stop. So shit day waiting in hospital etc. Car will probably be write off so build will need to be put on hold to gather some funds, you just know payout will be crap and excess to be deducted etc. Off to get some cider!!

That must have been a bummer but an easy error to make.
If only my cock up was that easily sorted :(
As you know, I have been spending the last couple of weeks having a darn good clear out of years n years of clutter that I have been hoarding in the workshop.
My build is now sitting proudly on its wheels in the middle of the workshop. I have oodles of room to wander about & admire my progress.
I have the rear wheels on my extra level section of the floor ( Used to be my fabrication area ).
Thinking that this would be an ideal chance to set the rear wheel camber, I grabbed my MF builders square for some initial indication of the amount of adjustment required.
Squatting down by the rear wheel, ohhh the bliss of having the room to sit on the floor next to the build :D
My joy was very short lived !!??
I soon noticed that I have sort of, er um ........... have the upper rear shock mounts in the wrong place ( Too far to the rear ) & the shocks are slightly on the piss
They are going to be a real bar-steward to cut off. Kinda hoping i'll be able wash them off with my BOC Firefly gas axe without causing too much heat distortion.
If the worst comes to the worst, I guess i'll have to re-work the plates :o
If that is the only major cock up that I make during the build, i'll live & learn !!

:D & i,ll be able to see over the top of most vehicles on the road .
the reason my chassis is on top of my van is with the great help from forum member "Mark", we stripped the engine/box/diff/all wishbones/suspension etc to just leave the bare chassis so that i could move my car to the Saturn sports cars premises,
thanks to the help from Mark it was stripped & on the roof within an hour & a half & on its first journey to the unit, got it unloaded & within an hour it was all back together again, engine/box in & back on wheels.
a big thanks to Mark for all your help, shout if i can repay the favour ;)
so now the car is at the unit i,m hoping to have it finished within my original schedule by January & hope to have it IVA,d end of Jan.

what have i started. all i did was post a picture of a kit car on the roof of my car and its turned into a competition to see who can take to the highest level.
i think your winning so far andy. although the vehicle is way to suitable for the job. but then again i do have to commend you for getting it up so high. it was a bad enough job getting one on the roof of the car let alone on a van
HandyAndy
9th November 2009, 06:58 AM
:D my van might only be an old LDV postie van but it certainly has its uses
it was quite easy to get the chassis onto the roof, just stood it on end at the back rail & lifted/slid it over the roof of the van, all the engine etc in the back of the van with engine hoist made the van even slower than usual :o
got some strange looks especially when i had to stop off at a B&Q store, you could see people looking thinking "what the hell is that?":D
couldn,t have done it without Mark,s help tho:cool:

A little update.......
As most of you are aware, the last 2 months have been a hectic time ( my involvement with Saturn Sports Cars ), in getting the unit ready prior to opening for business at the beginning of November.
Spud69 suggested that as i haven,t had much time on my own car recently to set myself a target .....
So the target is............. to do the following to the car, brake lines fully installed, fuel line & tank installed, wiring fully fitted, engine fully fitted
and to have the engine running by Christmas
fingers crossed it,ll happen........GULP:D :D

You should make a list of "things to do" i know yours will be quite large :D but it definately helps :p
I have done it and it motivates me as you tick things off, you do things in a more methodical order aswell
My car is not a million miles off being finished but once you make a list you realise just how many little things there are to do
It helps me get more done too as you dont have those moments where you are stood doing sod all for half an hour to deciding what to do next!

It doesn't matter how big or little the engine, it always feels good when they crack up for the first time. Just after Chrimbo I fitted a replacement engine into a small quad my son and his mate bought (piece of crap really but they want to play;) ). New engine was an Ebay purchase and not specifically for this chinese quad so some mods were in order, anyway after about three hours pratting about spread over three days I finally got it to start, no exhaust fitted so rather loud but it didn't stop me giving it some big licks on the throttle. Mrs did video it on my phone but TBH the sound quality is so distorted its rubbish.
Anyways, good show Andy, you'll soon be treating us all to day like Ash has given us today, didn't know there could be so many expectant fathers:D

Looking good Andy, quite some progress there. Just one thing, those headrests are too low for IVA. The top of them have to be 753mm from the base of the seat. I have the same seats and measured mine today. It's an easy fix, just cut some tubes that go over the existing headrest rods so they can't go down so far. Hope I'm not teaching Granny to suck eggs:)
Keep up the great work.

Glad the pics helped, :)
As for the tank, the rail that the tank sits on is a 25mm box tube & at average bumper height, as most "7" style cars have a similar arrangement.
Tho I suppose if it worries you there is nothing stopping you building a "cage" around the tank from the bottom rail to perhaps the diff cage area.

Hi John,
Thanks, the 2 cars do look good together, Spuds car being finished & on the road & mine.......well.........it,ll be finished for this summer :o :D
Do you mean the back braces of the roll bar on my car? if so, then I have yet to fit them, I purposely waited until I had my seats so that I can weld in the cross brace at the correct height for the seat to seat belt upper mounting point, as this is specific to height from seat squab etc etc for the IVA test.
Once the cross brace is in I,ll be welding the back braces into place, tho mine are in a different position to that of Spuds car ( personal preference ) as they go from the bend of the roll hoop down to the outside corners of the chassis base.
The back braces on spuds car are as book spec when fitting an ali rear tub but spud adjusted his GRP tub to accept them.
My own car has different rear chassis arrangement which is to accept the GRP tub, which is how your kit will be supplied.
hope this info helps?

Hi All,
I,m back, I won,t go into a lengthy comment but would like to thank you all for your amazing support in the last few days, & all the PM messages, my inbox is full & i will reply to each & everyones message, please bear with me.
Right.......
Yesterday I spent what i can only describe what was a fantastic day working on my car, Thanks to Spud,s help, I,ve now got my car back at my mothers garage as i,m spending alot of time there ( personal family stuff reasons ), anyways.....Spud dropped my car off at about 9am yesterday morning ( Thanks Spud) & i spent the whole day working on it, yesterday i did the following....
mock fitted the rad ( need to make permanent brackets)
cut the coolant hoses to correct length
fitted the new rad fan purchased at stoneleigh
fitted & plumbed in the oil catch tank purchased at stoneleigh
Tidied up the wiring ( enclosing it in the split conduit stuff)
mounted the relays & fuse box to the engine bulkhead
with info from "Marks" IVA feedback i,m now wondering where / how to site the "secret" master kill switch, it is fitted into the electrics & works a treat but not sure where to conceal it.
Whilst fiddling with the electrics I must have somehow disturbed a connection as when i tried to start it = it would turn over but wouldn,t fire
I must,ve spent a good 2 hours looking for the reason to this
found a stray wire with a spade connector....hhmmmm " this must fit somewhere" ....finally worked it out, fitted this wire into where i thought it belonged ( i must say " me & electrics don,t mix" ), turned the key & whaheeeyy she is purring like a cat, albeit a noisy one.......must make up my exhaust system
all in all a very productive day :)

Its been a while since I,ve updated this thread, so thought I,d do so by asking for your opinion on the following please........
I,ve been busy fitting my bodywork recently, & I can,t decide...........
Originally I had Tango Orange arches but fancied a change :D So with a great big thankyou to Spud at Saturn I now have lovely polished black arches .....Thanks spud :)
I need your help please guys......which photo/fitment looks the best?
The first photo is of how I believe they are meant to be fitted ( tips of the wings at the bottom edge of the side panel & the rear tub), this creates quite a gap between the tyre & the arch......or is it just me being picky?
The second photo shows the wing approx 1 inch lower than the rear tub...
Which way should I fit my arches?

I,ve been busy tinkering away lately....
So the result being that if I don,t have any problems bleeding the brake system,
By this time next week my Roadster will be going for a little test drive, on a private road :),
Tho, today I,ve been fitting a seat runner & its doing my head in , what a bloomin faff on that is  :D
Only other major things to do to the car is fit the tranny tunnel panels, n/s rear arch & a boot lid, & fit the brake/indicator lights to the rear wings.
cheers
