My daily driver died on monday.
Don't have photo's of the pistons, but they were useless too.

The daily driver is an old VW caddy. Basically all the problems are previous owner issues as I like to call them. I've been doing nothing but sorting out problems that the previous owner was hiding away. Now I know why he sold it, he'd overheated it badly and kept doing in the head gasket. Sad fact of life, cheap rubbish Chinese gaskets don't work!
Now I've known for a while that it needed a fair bit of engine work and I've been putting together a motor to use while I redid the caddy's motor. Sadly the engine in the car broke before I could get it finalised. Just seemed silly to put the uncompleted spare in when it would take about the same money to fix the one in the car. I've used the head from the spare because the original needs a fair bit of welding.
The crack on the manifold is right on an old repair and is the worst of the lot, the whole manifold is full of cracks. New manifold is just silly money, so it's gone back in with the crack and i'm on the hunt for a good used one or a well priced branch.
This is not mine but very similar.

Very sad to hear that!
Thanks. Not the end of the world though, just a setback. I am still starting the chassis in the next week or so.:)

bolt the manifold to the head before you try and weld/ repair it
also preheat the area you are going to weld with oxcy/acetylene or a blow torch etc
(please cover /protect the rest of the head with a fire blanket or similar)
i,ve had some success with troblesome cast manifolds this way
cheers les g

Les, i picked up a good used one for next to nothing. The manifold in the pic is really very badly cracked all over.
I will however keep those tips in mind should I ever find a manifold that has just one crack in it.
Drove the car again last night, it is now a sweet quiet engine. It's never been so mechanically quiet.
