A question for our mechanical experts - is there any reason why I shouldn't dismantle my alternator to clean it up? I've been having a cleaning and painting session this weekend and loving the new looking shiny parts. Was thinking I might strip my alternator to clean and lacquer the cases as I figure I'm less likely to damage it when it is in pieces!

You should be ok stripping the alternator just be careful not to damage any internal parts  I've done a couple in the past and they still worked fine when put back together :)

It should be fine David. The most difficult part will be refitting the brushes, incidently I'd fit new brushes unless the old ones are nearly new.

I once went to the Lucas factory and the guys there used a wire hook to hold them in place while the put the commutator in.

I use electrical switch cleaner to clean the windings and commutator.

Cheers

Chris :)
