Silly me
When I was younger, I used to breed and show budgies.
After several years, I bred the perfect show bird. His build & plumage was breathtaking.
A national show winner, that’s for sure.
During the run up to the show season & just as the budgie was reaching peak condition, I noticed a small lump on his beak.
Knowing how picky the show judges are. I thought this is going to be a disaster.
To drown my sorrows, I went down the local for a few pints.
My luck was in.
My village vet was sitting at the bar.
We shared a few pints & got round to the subject of my budgie.
The vet told me not to worry and told me a real neat trick.
He said “ Take a small file & file the lump off on the day of the show “
Now, we had both had a few pints, so I thought that I would double check that I was hearing right.
Let me get this straight “ File it off “
The vet said “ Yep that’s right it works every time “
The day before the show, I went down to the DIY store for a small file.
Not knowing what sort of file would be best, I asked the stores owner for some advice.
He said “ What is the file needed for “
I explained about my budgie & relayed what the vet had told me.
In horror, he exclaimed “ You can’t do that “ “ You will kill the poor little thing “
Fair enough I said, you are entitled to your opinion & reminded him that the vet has over 30 experience & knows what he is talking about.
I left the store with a small, fine grade file.
A few weeks later I was back at the DIY store buying some materials for a new aviary.
The stores owner came over and said “ How’s that show budgie of yours “
It’s dead, I replied.
The stores owner said “ I told you that you would kill it “ …… “ Honestly, what idiot would take a file to a budgies beak “
“ It wasn’t the file that killed it “ Said I
“ It was when I put him in the vice that done it “
