View Full Version : Looking for dimension

Hi folks, I've a bit of a very non roadster related problem. Doing a clutch on a friends Jetta 4 which was done recently but it's not working so well.

The clutch I've taken out looks good, no real reason for it to not work. I'm now suspicious of the skimmed flywheel. Did they get the dimension in the following photo right?

Any help appreciated.

In the outer end of the G/box there is a plate with VW stamped on it,inside that is the lever for the clutch rod, they sometimes crack across the middle and open up when you press the clutch.

If you skim a flywheel both bearing surfaces should be done to equal amounts one to compensate for the other if you get my drift.

I'm aware of the lever issue, this ones good.

I'm looking for the dimension because I think the last folk who skimmed the flywheel did it wrong.

IATN won't let me join and I've lost my login from waaaay back. Doesn't normally matter because I do almost no car work these days.

Sensible fella, cars are a pain but make me money to spend on making "another" one !

I actually don't miss the day to day grind of working at the dealers. It's taken some years away from the dealers to have enough wheel passion to want to build again.

Found a friend who has an un-machined flywheel in his workshop. He will measure and let me know. So problem solved!:D

Now that I have the info I am confused.

The flywheel I have measures at 24mm the unmachined one at 21mm. I would have thought it would be the other way around as the car I'm busy with has a too high clutch.

Is my thinking right or have i lost the plot?

A very wild stab in the dark here & being that I do not have a clue as to what the complete clutch assembly looks like

Is it possible that with an extra 3mm depth is giving less clamping force between the friction plate & clutch cover.

May be possible that the cover plate fingers are not pulling all the way dow & causing the thrust bearing to ride high !!??

As I said........Total stab in the dark :o :o

That makes a fair bit of sense. I will when I have the energy for it, take the whole assembly and apply my mind to it. I hate doing time sensitive car work, rather do it at my pace. That way I know it gets done right.
