Help! How do I separate the handbrake cable from the backing plate? I removed something I thought was a retaining spring/sleeve on the inside, but nothing has changed. I tried some blunt force, scratched the sleeve with the pipe wrench, but it does not move.

If memory serves me right ..........once the cable has been unhooked from the brake shoe lever , there is a u clip that retains the cable ferrule in the backplate.

If you have removed the u clip......it is most likeley that it is just corrosion holding it firm.

You may have to get angry with it :) :)

The Haynes manual also mentions the u-clip. But I can't find anything like it, anything else I can remove. :-/

As they say, a picture is worth 128K words :) Inside:

Am I missing something?

Is there a clip like this on the other side of the back plate like this one.

Thanks very much! I had removed it (and it broke into two pieces), so perhaps now I just have to drive the cable out with a hammer...

It worked, thanks again! It took some bashing with a big hammer.
