Well I got my chassis kit from Saturn last Friday, unpacked it and checked it - all hunky dory. Got my nice shiny new inverter welder on Saturday and set to gluing bits together on Sunday. Now it's Wednesday and things are progressing nicely. I had already made the lower wishbones, you can see one in the photo. You can also see the remains of the donor behind the build table. Obviously very early days but it's another one on the way.

You've made an awful lot of progress since Friday. It took me over a month to get my chassis to that stage...although i was cutting it as i went. You'll have your car finished in no time.

that's the merits of a precut kit :D

It's only tacked at the moment but I am well chuffed with the progress thus far. The chassis kit was done very well and only a tiny amount of fettling was required. There are a couple of tubes in the tranny tunnel that are too short but Andy is sorting that for me. I will point out that I did not need the hacksaw :)
I have quite a few bits ready done to go on the car so it will seemingly start off quite quickly. I have had the donor since November and have got the engine / box and a few other bits off it but there is still much to be done with regards to removing bits.
It's all great fun, I like the challenges and the triumphs as each bit comes together. This is my first experience of serious welding, it was all practice up till now. The inverter welder makes it so easy it's unreal. It was a serious bargain, it's a 200 amp Tig MMA jobby, it came with all the bits and pieces except the gas bottle and regulator and it only cost 140 quid delivered.
I have not tried tig yet, I will learn that skill before it comes to the petrol tank:eek:
Happy building chaps!!

The last car I built - a Robin Hood project2b was started at the end of January and was SVA'd registered and on the road in the July of the same year. This one will take a lot longer as I have got older, wiser and slower. I'm not going to mess about but I ain't going to rush it either. I think I will enjoy it more that way....

Here are a couple of photos of one I made earlier. It was mainly made in the Blue Peter fashion of using sticky back plastic, used detergent bottles and alsation droppings. Not the best kit in the world but it was cheap:)
The dash was for SVA , there is a knob missing off the heater control. The next dash was based on an Escort 1300GT mark 1 instrument panel, it looked a lot better.

You're making great progress there Enoch, good show. If I might just make one small safety related comment though, unwind all the cable from your extension lead before you do any serious welding, having it coiled on the drum and pulling serious amps through it can cause it to heat up quickly and catch fire. I have seen one go and the sparks are quite spectacular but the smoke that the insulation gives off is quite dangerous.

Keep up the good work.

Hi Davey, you are spot on with the extension lead thing, when they are wound up you can get induction and heating up and all sorts of nasty things. When using it I always unwind it and leave it in loose coils under the bench where nobody can trip over it and its free to cool and not suffer from induction.
Good point well made old chap!

Cheers Enoch, didn't want to teach granny to suck eggs but there are many people who don't know about the risks of using wound up extension leads. The one I saw go up was supplying a food van and they had a 3KW chip fryer going along with two fluoro lights and a couple of fridges. I spotted the smoke coming from the extension lead and shouted just as it burst into flames, lots of spectacular sparks before the trip went off but the smoke was horrendous, thick black acrid choking smoke that was undoubtedly poisonous.

As a qualified Electrician I have seen the same.
I am sure he just wound it up before taking the photos to make it look tidy.
But the trailing 2.5mm power cable acroos the window without clips makes me worry.
If you lived near to me I would pop round and place all the cables in 25mm plastic conduit to make it safe, cheap as chips from your local Wholesaler.

Nice car you have.

I have just today started with my number four car.

My god there are some sharp eyed people on this forum:)
You may notice that the window is new, the cable used to be clipped to the underside of the old window frame. I really should have finished that ( and 1000 other jobs) before I started work on the car. But I'm a bloke. I prefer to mess about with stuff I want to work on rather than stuff that "needs" doing. I have to keep explaining this to Mrs Enoch:D I will get round to it once some of the more essential jobs (drinking beer to clear space in the fridge etc.) have been done. Honest gov:D
