well, for some reason today i just was wondering what other sort of things people do in their spare time, so i thought id ask?:)

Me for one.. well ive got an amateur radio license which i make use of every so often, i love all things electronic, from programming pic chips and related projects to taking apart computers. I also used to do a bit of model rocktry, but nothing serious, and with all the bits of metal i have lying around and a welder i often try and scrape up somthing to do when i have nothing better to do, i even once tried(and failed) to make a crossbow out of excess 25mm box and a couple of bike shocks.

I like to irritate my Missus. I have become rather good at it:)
Seriously, I build steam engines. I am currently half way through a 5 inch gauge locomotive. I used to mess with electronics but I do that all day now for a living so like to mess with other stuff in my spare time. Also like messing about with boats. Used to build and fly model aircraft but don't get the time now.
Good idea for a thread, by the way:)

cars of corse. have been drifting e30's for a while but at the moment i am playing with a 1961 88" petrol landrover. she is a lot tatty but sound enough and loads of fun. a refreshing change from bmw and efi. pedal bikes have been a big part in my life, bmx lead to dirt jumping mountain bikes when my joints started to age but now that hurts enough to put me out for a week after a good ride. funny as i am not 30 yet. threw the winter i surf quite a bit and replace this in the summer with skate boarding. allways try and keep active but need to find some less impact related pass times. i know. i will build a car with soled seats and hardly any suspension travel. that will sooth my joints. lol

I used to do a lot of Kitesurfing, haven't been out for a few months though but i will be again soon. The dream is to turn up in the roadster at the beach, 2 hours kiting and then f off home with a big smile on my face. Hasn't happened yet but it will do. Here is me here back in 2007 at Redcar:

I'm a programmer by trade, mess around with computers at home too. Have as many laptops as people in the household (and we have 3 kids!). Linux on all of them.

When the lakes are liquid I go windsurfing. I'm also fantasizing of showing up at the beach with the roadster. I fit my kit inside my 4 gen Civic hatch easily, so perhaps it's possible to strap the board in the passenger's place in the roadster? ;-)

i suppose my main hobbies are a bit of a contrast to eachother........

spent 8 yrs racing motorbikes ( road racing at circuits such as Silverstone, Donnington etc), ended up getting into it in a big way when was asked to be a semi pro rider for a privateer team, had a great time, tho the bones eventually took longer to heal as time went by

I,ve owned 2 horses & enjoyed riding them at gallop speed, the highlight was galloping along the beach, also got into doing show jumping ( the arena fence jumping malarky)

My lifelong hobbie as an adult has been my dogs, i,ve owned 16 dogs in the last 22 yrs, still have 8 dogs at home now, 7 huskies & german shepherd,
I show my huskies at top level dog shows ( crufts etc) & also when time allows race them ( can never catch them tho ) in sled racing in the uk, tho its usually on a wheeled type buggy thing as we don,t get enough snow  .

and i build things for cars & sometimes build my own, lol

& then there is my family ..... 3 kids & the swmbo :D

nice idea this thread.

cheers

Well during the day I run my own business supplying and installing electronic gadgets and accessories for motorhomes plus servicing them. Last year I converted my own on an Iveco 4.2 tonne minibus to a luxury camper (well it will be if I ever finish it).

Hobbies include cars (obviously), getting away in our camper, wildlife, walking, photography, videography and editing (although I've not done a lot in recent times but I have done four DVDs of MMA fight nights for the local Dojo), real ale and of course knobbing around on t'internet.

Metalworking, a bit of woodworking and anything that's vaguely interesting.

I also enjoy reading non-fiction books and on the side, science fiction.

Also into dogs but less so than a few years back. Apart from 2 back street specials I've got a pure bred Rhodesian Ridgeback (Jack) and am thinking of getting him a girlfriend..

My number 1 Passion used to be a day out fishing in my boat at every chance :)

When that became impossible for health reasons I got into pyrotechnics .. I got a real buzz from that :D

Sadly that hobby has become politically incorrect & after a local peson was arrested by the anti terror mob ( Only had a few minor pyro chems ), I thought it was time to give up on that one !!?? :(

This brings me up to date, so I guess the Roadster build is my main hobby .... Some loose plans are hatching for my next project once the Roadster is complete :)

I do have quite a liking for electronics ..... This I might get into at some point ... Getting a bit long in the tooth to learn too much of the theory side of things though !!??

You guys seem to have such varied interests. makes me realise what a sad old fart I am. lol.

My interests since about 7 or 8 years old has been cars and motor sport with a smaller interest in bikes (motor) at about 20.

I found out at an early age that I was not much of a driver so involved myself in motor sport in other ways, mostly helping my older brothers racing exploits (see my flicker pictures) as an amiteur only.

We did a bit of offroad racing and scratch built a couple of cars. The last one having a renault engine, imp rear suspention Triupmph Spitire front and escort steering. We did the Roof of Africa Rally (in Lesotho) with that thing.

We then went circuit racing mostly at Kyalami and over the years went quite well with various cars, including a Renault 12 and a Fiat 124!

When big bruvver stopped racing I marshaled at Kyalami (KMA have a good website) and was Deputy Clerk of the Cource for a couple of meetings but stopped as it was not fun.

I then run a a couple of 1600cc Formula Fords for a few years.

Now back in the UK the roadster is my passion.

My only other interest is that I enjoy time with grandchildren, other than that its just cars. Oh and beer.

Like I said i said all a bit sad relly!!

For the last ten years a had a healthy obsession with the Landrover Marque.

Owned a classic V8 3.5 Range Rover then, an 84 Landrover 90 pick-up, then a 300tdi Discovery (wife blow the head gasket) then the holy grail of off road Land Rovers a 300tdi Defender 90 with all the gear, winch, snorkel, hi lift etc. I now run a 98 2.5 Diesel Range Rover. I spent many a happy week end either off-roading or fixing them.

More recently I have got right into me photography. I did the Army defence photography course and haven’t looked back.

The photography has taken a bit of a back burner since the Roadster came along although I get the odd bit of photograph work which gives me some cash for parts. Currently working on the regimental picture from Canada. There are 600 people in the picture if 1/6 buy it that is £2000 for yours truly. Never going to happen I will probably sell 10!

I did it the other way around - I started by building a 5" gauge loco (Sweet Pea) then decided to build a 12-inches-to-the-foot scale model car!

I am also quite an expert at annoying my missus! :D

That looks like a nice example, well done that man! I have built a 2 inch Clayton lorry, a 1 inch Minnie (never got it to run cos the boiler was less than perfect) and the now half built Boxhill 060 Terrier. I have not touched it for a good while as other interests have taken over but I have had it running on air and the boiler is done although I cheated and bought that. I have built numerous oscillating engines but most of those have gone to new owners now. I also owned a nice 3.5 gauge 040 Henley but I swapped it for a Jag a few years back :-) I didn't build that one myself but enjoyed steaming it.

Ah now steam engines is a different kettle of fish! I used to be part of a small group that ran pre victorian steam locos. We started with the full sized replica "Coalbrookdale" engine which was the worlds first ever steam powered railway loco built a full 26 years before Stephenson's Rocket. We then ran the replica of Hackworth's "Sans Pareil" which was built to compete in the Rainhill trials against Rocket. I have driven "Coalbrookdale", Rocket and Sans Pareil (all replicas). One of our group is the only living person to have driven all three replicas of the Rainhill Trials engines. i've already named two, can anyone name the third?

I'll try to dig out some photos if anyone's interested.

It was either novelty or perseverance, the only other two steam driven entrants. There was a human powered entrant called Manumotive - many people believe that entrant to be a joke. There was also a horse powered one called Cyclopede. Not sure which of the two was replicated, I would assume it was Novelty as that was the public's favourite?
I must go, need to clean my anorak:)

Well, I used to teach SCUBA diving, and when I wasn't teaching, I was in a quarry in the UK, or sloping off to somewhere warm.
Some pics of that - http://www.sean-h2o.com/

However, I suffered a DCI incident (the bends) so laid off the diving for a while. Got a fresh medical with no restrictions on it, so will be back in the water soon enough.

Do a bit of mountain biking, loads of good areas in Surrey, also at Swinley Forest in Bracknell.

Photography is becoming something I do quite a bit of as well.

I'll give you that one Enoch, it was Novelty built by Mr Erricsson and had a vertical boiler which proved to be quite a problem. To contain the heat it had a double shutter system at the top which obviously had to be opened to feed coke in. Trouble was that CO (Carbon Monoxide) collected inside this shutter and when it was opened the fireman got a face (and lung) full of pure CO. Proved to be quite a fast machine though. Cycloped was indeed horse driven with the horse walking on a treadmill. Manumotive and Cycloped were rejected as the trials were specifically for steam engines.

I'm going to hang my anorak up now too:o .
