yep your right bonzo its actually a late metric L5a with the removable bed section so you can swing something about 13-14inches diameter. it also has a power fed cross slide as well as carriage which is a lovely feature for facing things as you dont have to manually turn the handles. i also have just about all the accessories for it too, other than a hydraulic copy attachment :(
once the car is through the iva im planning to give it a full strip down and clean up.

yep it was certainly a lot easier with three people as we could have two people supporting it while the third controlled the hoist. last time i moved one of them i was on my own and couldn't move for 3days after i got it into the spot i wanted it.
all i need to do now is find a bargain cheep 2-2.5hp single phase motor.

hey ash,
you have the same lathe as me=....
good bit of kit, made all sorts on mine, just watch the drive belts ours has a tendency to squeel a bit dosnt affect performance just abit noisy.. other than that its a fantastic machine.
if ide nown you had one id of recomended you just got a set of external jaws for the chuck you have since the tube behind the chuck is only about 2 inch from memory.
best of luck with it

i dont even think that its 2 inch through the middle tbh. i know the other one i have has a bigger hole through the middle but it doesn't have the removable section in the bed like this one.
i have got the reverse jaws just didnt put them in the pictures. i have got 3 chucks of varying sizes may have a 4th on the way soon. have also got two sets of change gears metric and imperial, 2 different facing plates, 2 fixed stays, 2 moving stays, ball and taper cutting attachments, quick change tool posts, fixed and rotating tail stock centres, 3 drill chucks, bed stop/lock and a bucket load of tooling carbide and hss.
i have got a couple of spare belts and a spare clutch. if its squealing all you need to do is go round the back of it and adjust the tension on the motor mount.

Sounds like you have plenty of tooling for your lathe Ash
Once the Roadster is on the road perhaps i'll have the time & space to set-up then learn how to use mine properly :)
Perhaps mine is a bit later than I thought , certainly got the removable section in the bed & power cross feed.
This may make you smile ..... I found out about the power cross feed by accident shortly after I bought it, played with it for a while ..... Buggered if I can remember how to engage it now :o :o
Had some tooling with the lathe but I suspect that some of it is in poor condition !!

i was very lucky both of mine come out of a boys school. they have been used very little over the years and it shows as they have perfect as new bedways and there is no wear on any of the gibbs. luckily the school over the years used oil instead of suds which has covered them in oil making them look rather mucky but preserved them beautifully while they sat about for 20-30 years behind a row of cupboards doing nothing

Kind regards

everything i have learnt to do on a lathe has been either through the internet or books. i can grind my own tooling and have mastered things like turning odd shapes but i know there is masses of things that can be done on the thing that i dont even have a clue where to start.
i would love to do an evening class to learn even more but the newly built local college where i did my welding don't want to do it. what's more frustrating is they have all new lathes and mills but only use them for the daytime courses.
