sump dimensions

hi
i have a 1.8 cvh sierra engine and in process of doing head gasket. i understand the sump has to be altered for clearance.
does anyone have any diagrams / measurements of what is required. and how much do you take off pick up tube

The sump has to be made about 150 mm high, from the gasket to the bottom.
One practical way to do it is to flip it upside down on a level surface, fix a pencil on a square and use it to mark the 150 mm waterline. Then cut and extenend the sump on the shallow side or to the side to make up for the lost volume.

Ideally, you want the bottom of the sump at the same height as the bottom of the bell housing. My rough measurement with a tape measure indicates it's about 155 mm with a Type 9.

When I altered the CVH sump for the engine I was going to use, it only needed 20 -25mm removing from the bottom.

You should be able to follow the general guide in the book ;)

If you take 20mm from the sump, take the same amount from the pick up pipe.

If you look at the sump when the engine is bolted to the gearbox .... You'll notice that the sump is not a great deal lower than the bottom of the gearbox bell housing .... You'll not gain a huge advantage by removing too much sump :)
