evening all i'm new to the site. and i'm looking to start my own roadster.just a quick question on engine choice. i was thinking of using a fiat twin cam engine as i suggests as an option. has anyone had any experience of fitting this engine and is it worth it . also what box would i neeed to convert it to rwd, or if there are any adapters to convert it to the type 9 gearbox.

The fiat twincam mentioned in the book is the old unit that was used for years in their RWD cars like the 131 Mirafiori.

Gr8 engine in it's day but theres better units ot ther now.

If you have it then may be worth using and yes I think there possibly is a type 9 conversion kit arround ( try morris minor parts retailers )

The old Fiat twinc was a fantastic engine, tough as they come and very tunable. Fiat gearboxes are made of chocolate though so don't go near one (I had one explode at 80MPH and it was scary in big brown sloppy dollops:eek: ). don't know if there are too many of these lumps around now as they are really old tech by modern standards, not sure quite when Fiat dropped the twinc ut they were certainly in production into the eighties.

In edit: sh!t, I just realised that makes them at best 21 years old and at worst 30+! I'm getting old :-(

fiat are still using twinc derivatives in some of their more recent cars although they are obviously progressions, the block remained almost the same other than the introduction of twin balance shafts in the higher powered turbo units.

im not 100% sure but i have a feeling the alfa 75 box may fit.

be warned twincs are very expensive to rebuild especially the late ones with nitrated cranks and nimonic valves. cranks come in around a grand and cant be reground and the valves around £50 each.

If you can get your hands on an early Fiat twinc they are very tunable, tough as old boots and last just about forever, compared to a Pinto I know which way I'd jump:rolleyes: .

im guessing its a 16valve? is it turbo or na?

the na ones are not to bad rebuild cost wise but the turbo ones will hurt you.

i had one of these before i went down the kit car road.

Absolute ANIMAL of an engine 200bhp out the box. near on 300bhp with 3inch down pipe, cams hybrid turbo and 3bar fuel pressure regulator. only limitation on them is the standard ecu and map sensor that wont let you boost over 1.5 bar regardless of what engine map you are running.

im not 100% sure but i have a feeling the alfa 75 box may fit.

the Alfa 75 had the engine up front and a transaxle in the rear. Engine is connected to the trans by a driveshaft that turns engine speed. Clutch is in the rear.
