hi
just cleaning all my parts up and decided to change seals at side of diff (of sierra)
do the seals just prise out and new ones slide in or is there anything else i should do. does look straight forward but just want to check first.

also does anyone know what oil is used in diff. drained mine of, then checked haynes manual and it doesnt say what to put back in! oops

any advice appreciated

Yes Steve,

I replaced the front seal on mine, if you prize out the old ones out with a screwdriver, clean out the housing and gently tap in the new ones with a piece of wood that just fits in snug.

Standard diff and gearbox oil is fine for the diff.

is there definately not something else that needs to be done first
thanks

The drive shaft seals have no trick fixings.

I usually use a very large (MF) flat bladed screwdriver to prise em out ;)

If they are being a royal pain in the ass, try finding a peice of slim flat bar, put a small 90 degree bend in one end & a larger 90 degree bend on the other end.

Hook one end under the seal & smartly tap the other end in an upward motion with a small hammer .... That should get it moving :)

Right .... Just been out & removed my diff seals !!

They were on my to do list & the diff was sitting in the middle of the floor anyways.

No trick fixings but boy, were they tight

Took a serious bit of mullering to get them out .... My trusty MF screw driver would not shift them.
My tyre lever would not shift them at first .... I took a large pin punch & smartly tapped the flat face of the seal, in an inwards motion towards where the centre of the shaft would be.

This helped to release the bond at the sides of the seal .... You'll need to do it in a few places, working your way around the seal.

Placed my lever under the face of the seal, a couple of sharp taps later & out they popped :)

No I haven't got a set of seal pullers, nor do I intend to buy some just for a one off job :D

Anyways, jobs a good'un & no dammage done ;)
