Electrolytic derusting

Hi guy's
I want to derust my front uprights via electrolytic way. I allready prepared tub and stuff. Just want to know, can i put these uprights in one piece in the tub or should i disassemble it and remove the bearing ?

Personally i would dis-assemble them as it makes it easier to inspect how effective the derusting has been and you can then repack the bearings with new grease easier.Also it makes spraying the uprights easier as you will be able to get into all the tight spots.

I took my uprights off the sierra damper/shock unit and just put them in whole. Was using quite a low power battery charger however and it took about 4 days. Bit of wire brushing and they came out lovely! Photos of it all are in my build diary... happy de-rusting!

The subject of electrolytical derusting has been covered several times in yhe past, also on the locostbuilders.com forum.
I think at one point, someone mentioned that the cover domes are not easy to get hold of. So I would suggest you make sure that you have all the right bits before disassembling.

The only article about the science of electrolytic derusting (http://www.holzwerken.de/museum/links/electrolysis_explanation.phtml) I found written by a qualified chemist suggested using stainless steel anodes, claiming they stay inert. So this scare about chromium salts in the electrolyte might be just that, but of course better safe than sorry. I have a hunch that it might depend on voltage whether chromium will be dissolved or not.

I have dabbled a little with Electro plating & even managed to get to the stage of some simple Copper plating.
Never went any further due to the very high cost of a suitable power suply & the exterme difficulty of obtaining some of the rather nasty chemicals used for plating :(

During my research into Electro plating I have read a large number of technical publications related to that subject.
I knew that you could use an agressive solution to de-rust metal in a plating set up but until quite recently, never knew that it was possible to do it so easily & cheaply using the method decribed in that post :rolleyes:

Hi all,just a short note on derusting if you know ayone with a saftykleen degreaser,they are doing trials for a water based rust remover which is absolutly brilliant and does exactly what it says onthe tin!just drop the parts in and leave for a day and the rust has gone.
