As some of you know, I am trying to resist touching the growing mountain of parts due to other projects that need finishing..

Our MK1 Golf is ready for the road after 29 months, It's not how I wanted it returned to the road but we need a second car as we have been struggling since the Mondeo Failed it's MOT in Jan.

My 1987 Sierra Sapphire, Needs to be ready for FordFair in Early August. I think this will just make it, but will not be finished

My 1989 XR4x4 Turbo Technics. Is on hold till everything else is done...

So I should not be working on the Roadster at all, but it got the better of me on Saturday/Sunday.. Whilst trying to look after the kids I also cleaned, sprayed and bushed up most of the wishbones. Not completed the job yet as I ran out of £Land spray cans. going to do a lot of layers. I did a bit of trial fitting. My Spax shox are going to need some new bushes by the looks as they seem to be 11mm DIA tubes, odd???

We pushed the chassis into the garage too on it's make shift trolly. I have started cleanign up the base rails for painting before fitting the floor, I will do this when the weather outside is no go for working on the other cars.

I am also picking up 3 spare V6's in a couple of weeks, one has just come out as a runner so this will be going in the roadster.

TT,

That’s great, I knew it would get the better of you,:D taking your lead I think I will sack the head light mounts and spray my wishbones also.

Good to see the build, of sorts, is progressing.

No pics uploaded but. I Swung one of the spare engines over the bay. It was never going to fit as it still has the front 4x4 gear. However it looks like it shoudl go in ok. should be enoughlength too.

Trial fited the wishbones and came across an issue with the mounts, these will need easing as they are too narrow.

Chassis is now on it's side and the passenger chassis rails have been cleaned up and sprayed ready for cutting the floorpan ( 2mm Ali tread plate ) which I am going to cut down to length and widthish tonight.

Floors Phase 1.

Passenger floor almost cut, just the front side cut to do. I started with the Jigsaw but got a bit frisky and the blade got clogged with fused ali... So I went onto the trusty old Scorpion Repo Saw which actually did a pretty good job.

Only spent about half an hour as it was almost 9pm and don't want to annoy the neighbours.

Looking good TT - I've just cut my floor out and used a 1mm stainless cutting disc on the angry grinder as a few people suggested. I was amazed at how easy and controllable it was to cut the sheet. I'm actually looking forward to cutting the rest of the panels out :p

Clecos turned up, was going to bring the rivets , seal and drill bits back from work but I got stuck for 4 hrs trying to recover the e-mail of a user who deleted it ( we normaly don't bother ) and by the time I left the office the roadster bits slipped my mind.

But I had 1 4mm drill bit, so I have made a pilot Jig, it's only got two pilot holes at present I will add a few more to save having to move it over and over. And with that I have drilled 3 of the 100 Passenger holes and put in the wonderful Clecos... YAYA!!

Bet it feels good to get started! The chassis looks good from the photos, it's nice to have a head start. glad to see your workshop looks a bit like mine, I was starting to get concerned with all the nice, tidy, empty ones that everybody else seems to have. Nice to know there are still some normal people in this world:D

Sort of feels good, but I feel bad about avoiding finishing the other car first. And this is supposed to involve the 6yr old so I need to set up build sessions to involve him so he does not get board with the boring tasks that I will have to do behind the sceens..

Anyway, Measured the rackmount and it seems it's to the revised design which is good news.

Ok, So we have had a setback or two. One is being rectified for me.

But the big one is that all the suspension brackets are too small, and some of them ( at least two rear ones ) are in the wrong place. So my bargain second hand chassis that required no work is going to need a little fetteling an£26 worth of brackets from Dave at Rouge.

So Whilst I wait for them to turn up, and for me to get the energy to sort them I am cracking on with the floors and tunnel..

This evening I marked out and cut out the passenger tunnel side, and then transferred the cut-out template to make the similar drivers ready for cutting out tomorrow..

Ooooh that's a bummer. Has someone used shock mount brackets by mistake?
I bought a lot of my brackets and wishbone bits from Rogue, they were all spot on and delivered very quickly. I figured it was not worth trying to make the suspension brackets considering how cheap they are to buy.

They Measured up at 42andasmidgen MM . I think Locost ones are 42mm so it may bee that the builder bought the wrong brackets, or measured up wrong.

New brackets turned up from Rouge Engineering on Saturday morning and are spot on, slide over the wishbone nicely.

Unfortunately the MK1 golf failed it's MOT so I have to do a few jobs including a tricky weld before I can get back to the roadster.

Ok, the chassis went of to Saturn last week to have the brackets redone, and the rear tub bars removed to I can fit a Glass one.

I have done a bit of work tidying the garage.

Cut the second tunnel side pannel last night and trimmed a corner of the one floor I have ( can't do the other without the chassis. )

Changed the flywheel on the engine from the 2.9 to the 2.8 one. And took off the front diff.. Sump off tonight if I get to it :)

Pics to come.

Pics still to come

Both floors have been cut and all the rivet holes have been drilled with the exception of the seat bearers ( still to position and fit ).

So, tunnel panels to drill , seat back to drill.. And the construction phase 1 to comence with me and the boy.. Hope he apreciates the prep work :p

A few of the recent shots,

The vicious ( hahaha ) viscous fan put up considerably more of a fight than they usualy do.

Both floorpans are now done. it was a bit of a struggle cutting the ally tread plate as the saw kept getting stuck on swarf, WD40 helped a bit. Most of the holes are drilled.

And of course a shot of PAT1 returning my chassis.

Other progress includes both trans tunel pannels being cut and the first pair of seat mounting rails tacked in place. Seats and runners purchased :)

Those fans can be a right pain to remove sometimes, looks like you had to give it a stern talking to :) :D

Pleased to hear that you are finding some time to make progress with your build

twinturbo
12th September 2010, 06:49 PM
Today saw a little further progress.

We drilled the holes for the passenger tunnel panel, and a few guide holes for the rear seat back.

The holes for the seat mounts on one side were drilled. ( note that in no way was there an error in the location of the rear mount, it was a fully intentional move to take the extra weight  )

http://www.rob1tt.f2s.com/roadster/rds120910-1-sm.JPG

We then rotated the chassis to the horizontal and checked to see if my seat mounts were going to fit the seats.

Progress was then slow as the chassis became infested with...

http://www.rob1tt.f2s.com/roadster/rds120910-2-sm.JPG

Three hours later, the chassis was back up on it's side, the tunner rails ( PSGR ) cleaned up and after applying gooop that was stickier than sticky stuff in sticky land. The panel was rivited in place..

Unfortunately the battery was flat on the camera by now.

Ooooohh More progress..

Today I set out to fit the PS floorpan, Everything was ready for it so all that was required was to get the stick crap out of the caulking tube. The stuff is so dam sticky that the caulking gun broke. I had bought an air one, that was useless..

So without a gun, and the desire to get the crap out of the tube, I did the sensible thing and just cut the tube open and got the stuff out with and spread ( if you can call it spread ) it with a chissle.. That done, the floorpan was poped into place and guide rivets put in. Me and the boy then loaded the rest of the rivets, a few were tight which was strange as the holes had all been pre-drilled in one go. One or two holes had to be relived. We then popped in all the rivets, our 3yr old lent a hand at one point too...

So that's one side solid.

I have been out this evening and drilled the drivers transmission pannel, and then welded in the front section of the drivers panel. I also drilled the seat bearers for the seats runners.

So everything is set for paneling the drivers side :)

In between bits and bobs I have been making a start on cleaning up the engine. It's dirty slow work, but quite satisfying seeing the engine as it would have been when new.

7:15 PM start fitting driveres side tunnel and floor. Including spreading the evil gunge, loading the rivets ( tapping in the stubborn ones ) and popping them.

Drilled the seat mounts through floor, added extra rivet holes for seat mount rails, and rivited..

9:15 PM glass of wine

Next task is the seat back, but I need another tube of evil gunk for that.

Tonight...

Drivers bulkhead lined up and a few welds put in, need to clean up a bit more before finishing the welds. Will try and get that done tomorrow.

I checked that the pedal box had a chance of fitting and it was spot on :) just need to drill the hole for the master cylinder. and the mounting holes.

Last on tonight's list was getting the rear tub panel into place, it had previously been trial fitted, but now with the ally tunnel and Deamon Gunge it would not fit, so a little metal was removed to get it to slide in.

Had a productive two hours..

I cleand up round the drivers upper firewall and finished of welding round it. That went nice and quickly with the welder behaving itself. I then drilled all the remaining holes in the seat back pannel I am getting a bit sick of 4mm holes now.

Anyway, that done I cut out the passenger firewall pannel and trimmed it to fit. spurred on by my progress I cut down the tunnel top to size, and with it clamped to the front TR chassis rail I tapped over the two edges which turned out quite well so far. Just needs a bit of trueing when I find my flat pannel hammer..

Quiet Chuffed, soon be onto something other than pannel work :)

Drilling holes is a pet hate of mine.

I bet you will be pleased when all of that lot is done, pitty your little uns are too small to swing a drill :D

I got a different supply of evil gunge, and suffice to say that I was having trouble stoping it commign out  .

So...

The drivers bulkhead welding was finished, the seat back was fitted with rivits and not so evil gunge. The passenger bulkhead was fitted.

The Trans tunnel main top and forward top have been put in using rivnuts ( how awesome are they!! )

I have started preping the headlamp mounts and have bolted in the pedal box for it's trial fit..

Even now planning the purchase of the bodywork before christmas.

little slack on the reports...

I have swung in the engine, the gearbox despite being a Type 9 sits very close to the drivers tunnel. I think the V6 one may be a little wider. So I am trying to get the box as far over as possible. the standard box mounts are not much use in the stock placing.

The clearance of the engine to the bonnet looks close, but looks like it will work.
I am having some plates made up to bolt to the block for the engine mountsand once that is done I can get the engine properly level, then see how far forward I can get it to give more clearance for the clutch arm.

So soon I will have to order some bodywork.

The exhaust manifolds are also an issue so I have ordered flanges to make new manifolds.

Test fitted a Headlamp as well on Thursday, need to sort a couple of little things but i think they should fit up well.

So just chipping away at little bits,

Did I say I have bolted in the pedal box for first fit? that's in OK. and made a start on the fuel and brake lines. Tunnel tops are finished too.

Have had a couple of minor issues that I need to resolve.

My shock bodies touch the mounts, I think I will be swapping shocks.

I have two identical diff plates, but the supplier is happy to resolve that when I pop in for some other bits and bobs.

My headlamp tubes are narrower than the two plates on the headlamp's so I need to trim them & probably weld them together so they look ok. I am making a special tool to do up the retaining nut while the wires are in situe as an open ring spanner will not fit my design as it stands.

Yet another boring update, but after digging at the back of the garage I found my spare 24V 2.9 and attached to was my spare throttle cable. :) Glad I did not spend £20 on ebay.

I have also been finishing off and sparing the engine mounting arms over the last couple fo weeks and orderd 3mm plate to make up the chassis plates. Hopefully that will arrive before the weekend.

Fixings have also been ordered to aid in attaching the bodywork.

Also picking up a DOHC at the weekend, not sure what I am going to use it for.

Got a bargain pair of refurbed front calipers on the bay, saves me cleaning up a set from the collection.

Blooming heck Rob, has it been that long

Only seems a couple of months ago to me .... There you go, showing my age again :o

Hope you don't mind the thread high jack mate !!

Can you recommend me a reliable computer back up device ?

I remember what you said to me about SD cards & pen drives ;)

Thinking along the lines of a USB external hard drive ( Dont have a massive budget ) but Junior has done a massive amount of behind the scene development work on my web domain & I really want to back it all up, fully independent from the host server.

Also need to store all of my personal stuff as well.

I case it makes any difference, I use 64 bit Windows 7 Pro.

twinturbo
3rd February 2011, 08:20 PM
It depends on what quantity you have, how often it changes, where the live data lives, your own buildings etc.

If your live data is in your house, and your backup stays on the shelf next to it then your at risk. If the data is on a web host then back it up to your PC.

You can buy external Hard Disks for around £50. not a lot to discriminate them. Ideally have 2 and rotate them. Keep at least one away from the live data (not in the same building).

Or use one of the Web data stores and upload to that.. service such as live drive.

And don't write over the last backup just incase it fails. keep at least 2 versions of the backup.

If the data is quite small then burning a copy to DVD/CD is well within scope, most software will do a good job and you can file them away easily OFF SITE.

TT

AND.. Check the backup works by restoring something.

Bonzo
3rd February 2011, 08:47 PM
I don't have a massive amount of data to store.

My domain limit at the moment is set to 1gig & only have a few gig of personal archives to store .

Sounds like a couple of small external HD's will be ideal .... Do you think solid state HDs are an option ?
No idea if they are a tried & trusted storage medium as yet.

I tried the CD/DVD route several years ago but found that they sometimes became unreadable after a very short period !!

Probably my own fault for buying Crap media & el cheapo writers :o :o

Thanks for your advice Rob, it is much valued :)

The main thing is my domain, I know my server provider backs up daily .... Just looking to keep a back up of my own, just to ensure that I have a copy of Juniors hours & hours of html scripting :)

twinturbo
3rd February 2011, 08:59 PM
Solid State is much more expensive.

You can pick up USB external enclosures for pennies on ebay, add a couple of 2.5" laptop drives and you have a very slimline solution. My external drive is a few MM larger than the HDD.

It's wise not to trust a hoster, in the SLA (probably very very very deeply hidden) will be a data loss disclaimer.

If your domain uses a database then make sure that is backed up regularly too.

Certainly whilst it's cold, wet and dark I will be in the garage making some progress.

I have plans to do little bits on both sierras and try and get one roadworthy. Taking the 24V out of one for the time being and putting a twink in it. And taking the 2.9 TwinTurbo out of the other car and putting it's original engine back in (so I can fully inspect the turbo engine)

I also have to break up the wifes old V6 Mondeo at some point, which I think will be once the Roadster is rolling and partly bodied. I plan a RWD Mid engine car build after everything else..

Have a meeting to go to tomorrow which may mean I have more time on my hands later in the year. Not sure yet though!!

Anyway.

Having fitted my engine mounts, I find i have the engine a little high. I have the scuttle and nose in place ( temp ) and the engine is proud of the bonnet top line ( I need to dig out the bonnet to see if we are touching. )

Meanwhile I have got the later plenum for the 2.9, it's about 1.5cm shorter. unfortunatly it needs slight mods to fit. in progress

Sounds like you have made some good progress :)

No need to drag the bonnet out, why not use a batten/straight edge to span the gap between the nose cone & scuttle.

That will give you a good visual idea of what is going on under the bonnet & where changes could be made ;)

So First up, you can see the 2.9 sitting on the temporary wood, the plan was to get it sitting on it's mounts that I made up and see how high it was on the bonnet line.

I had to get the scuttle out and put it sort of in place to find the bonnet line. This involved notching the drivers side flange. Unfortunatly at some point the rear lower corner has taken a little nock and thepointy bit has cracked off. So that will need sorting somehow.

http://www.rob1tt.f2s.com/roadster/rds200211k.JPG

With that in place I could see the engine was too high, and the next plan was to get the shorter plenum and see how much difference it would make.

TT

twinturbo
20th February 2011, 09:20 PM
The shorter plenum has 2 problems, 1st there is a random block of alloy that was rubbing on the overflow from the thermostat. So that had to be cut away. 2nd, there is a bulge under the plenum for the balance port and PCV outlet. this rubs on the steel fuel rail, so this has been machined down a bit (still to finish it off) So the plenum now fits.

But the line is still too high. So I either get the engine lower, make a custom plenum, or butcher the bonnet.

You may already know this but i will tell you anyway! be careful how you store your fibreglass panels whilst they are waiting to go on the car, your bonnet seems to have taken on a bit of a strange shape, looks like a little kink at the front right hand side of the picture

Apparently it carries on curing for quite a while after manufacture so it will distort and stay like that if its sitting in a twisted position etc

Nice work so far mate. I thought my engine was a but chunkey but yours.... just wow!
But do have a quick question for you. You engine mounts go direct from the engine to the chassis. This is ok for most of the normal builds but i have been thinking that maby it might be worth using rubber mounts for engines with a bit more power. Whats your view one this?

You can see his rubber mounts in a couple of his pics, they look like landrover v8 ones

Im using the same ones, nice and strong and cheap as chips off ebay

All engines should be mounted on rubber mounts with the exception of bike engines which are normally hard mounted

I think I have come to a descision.

The 2.9 is holding me up. And it's only 150BHP at best ( well a little more with the cam and chip ). Too many obstacles to outweigh my enthusiasm and time at the moment.

I have bought a 4pot type 9 and am on the hunt for an engine. Think it will be a big downsize to a 1.8 CVH at first. May have a look at putting my twincam in.

Think longterm it would be an RS2K keeping it's EFI as I think it is lower than that on the DOHC..

Anyone running a 16V I4?

Got somone ringing me about a CVH tomorrow.

2.9 can go in the XR4X4 or get sold off, not sure yet.

TT

twinturbo
25th March 2011, 11:34 PM
Engine mounting arms for the CVH are almost complete, the towers are almost done and hopefuly the engine mountings will be fully done by the end of the weekend.

Then I will hook it up and give it a fire :) before pulling it out and CRAKIN ON!

twinturbo
27th March 2011, 10:57 PM
Engine mounts now finished ( hopefully! )

Wired up the engine and gave it a turn just out of curiosity. WD40 as fuel.

Not even a missfire, pulled lead 2 and tested for spark and had an OK spark. So I am guessing a fresh battery and some real fuel will see it bust into life.

I had all three other cars started today.. A combined BHP of 623

Anyway once I have confirmed the engine fires I will haul it out and put it in a corner till it's needed.

I forgot to say just after the last post.. That my rear uprights had not been made correctly and the mounting plate had the holes slightly off line. I got some new correct plates. But had to remove the old ones from the uprights.

I have done most of one and am half way through the other. It's slow going slicing down and in and across and up and.... But I am getting there.

Once the crap is off and cleaned up I will line up the new plates and weld them on, bust remember to drill out the holes on the rear plates.

I have a week off soon, so hope to get some real progress under my belt.

Well, 3 weeks ago I knew I had a week off and the intention was to rework the rear uprights check the suspension and then pull the diff and engine so I could prep the chassis. a few other jobs were planned on other things including pulling the twin turbo engine from my XR4x4.....

Then I find I have a hernia so all heavy jobs are off..

So. My week has not gone according to plan.

So this week I have done many small jobs on my Sapphire 24V, fitted the security, refitted the dash and most of the interior.

I have done the plugs on my Volvo, and done oil and filters on the Galaxy, I have done coolant on both sierras and other minor jobs.

And in and arround this I cracked on with what i could on the Haynes, sides , scuttle, firewall and nosecone are located and mostly done.

No news on hernia opp, but had a couple of productive evenings.

During my week off I reworked the rear uprights, got one in place mocked up :)

Couple of days later I went to do the other and found the shock mount was about 4mm to narrow ( dam dodgy second hand parts) tried to EASE them out but they were getting out of shape :( F.....K I have just wasted 3hrs reworking them and a 12MM drill bit too ( it snapped  ) .. I tried to buy a single replacement but ended up with one turning up for the cost of postage, :D My supplier said it was a second and had been in the scrap bin but I could not tell why..

Anyway. Scroll forward.

I got a good Polo Rad ( S/H shelf wear ) and made up the mounts for that yesterday and it's sitting easonably.

I also fitted up all the wishbones and put on the shox temporarily. for mocking up. Hunted down a set of slave wheels ( they will actualy be the post SVA wheels.) Only got one on.

Whilst hunting for the wheels I found an old Sierra upper Column. These have a colapsible triangular shaft that slides up inside on nylon bushes. I had a lower column from some an old non pas sierra, and another few UJ's and shafts. Combining the sierra coulmn, the lower column, the uj gave me a space that could neatly be filled by a section of the triangular column. Perfect, Will take some pics tomorrow.

So all wheels have been on for a couple of weeks, and it rolls forwards and backwards ( you can even turn the prop by hand to move :D )

Clutch cable test fitted and works ( not a perfect fit but it works, think busing the tube would help.

Throttle cable, ( took 3 attempts to find it! ) fitted. I have had to make up a little adapter from the through pin fitting to the CVH cable end. And made up a temporrary return spring arangement that will be reworked when the box is back out.

Wired up the ignition switch and that works and starts the car nicely :)

28th August 2011, 09:05 PM
An exhausting few days...

I now have my exhaust all fitted up and just ready for final dressing of the welds, a job I was realy dreading ( thinking it was going to be a total PITA ) was actualy not bad.

I have a 1.8cvh with an RS turbo manifold on it.

I got a silencer a month or three back, and then guessed a selection of pipe parts ( 2x 1m , 2x 45deg 1x 33deg and a sleeve ).

I then also bought a S/H Westfield CVH 4 branch. As option 2.

last week I mounted up the silencer, and then redid it the next day as I was unhappy. I had put the bobbins to one side and the exhuats was rather bouncy with the weight to one side.. So I re-did it with the bobins directly below the pipe and it was much better.

I got the Westi manifold through the post and it was a tantalising
ly close fit. it would probably work fine if the engine was a fraction further forward...

Anyway, I bought a 3 stage pipe adapter 54mm down to 48. which was almost perfect to go onto the turbo flange of the RST manifold. A few minuets with my Engineers Fettle and it was very close indeed and welded to the flange. The sleve joint was then slid into that, the first 45 bend into that, and the second 45 bend into that. and it fitted the silencer nicely.

Welded, up and finished. Making the downpipe probably took an hour tops

There's a bike that belongs to my Brother in law in the way too... That's there at least till may when he comes back from NZ.

I am considering ideas to re-route the Pipes over the handbrake cable bracket rather than under. The space on the tunnel is dead there so going upwards may be easier. I will have a think.

My problem with my bonnet latches was attaching them securely , but needing to be able to take them off again to get the side panels of for final chassis prep. The latch needs one mounting where the top rail is and that became an issue.. I have a plan with a long bolt now.

I fired up my Acewell dash and put the magnet on a extension bar in my pillar drill, simulated the speedo input. Fortunatly my dash displays speed all the time so no need to fudge around with disabling the mode button. Need to order some switches from SVC, which I can hopefully commit to later this week.

Don't worry, I have not gone of task yet....

Rear reflectors have been fitted, and I have made up the plinths for the NAS fog and reverse lamps ( photo's to follow ).

The NAS lamps are 100MM in diameter, I spend ages on ebay looking for some container or tube I could cut down to make the plinths. Ages..

Then on B&Q's website I spotted 100mm ventilation ducting.

Went to B&Q and a ~50CM section was nearly £8... However they do a "telescopic" section which is ~40CM of 100MM with ~40cm of slightly larger. ( so almost the same length on the 100MM more material in total, more complex to sort for the supplier , so of course it's under £5 ( go figure.. )

Cut the plinths flush to the rear panel and have started to spray them up.

Also carried on with the dash and have cut out the switch panel ( it's a separate unit to the main panel in case it needs changing. It's been trimmed and the switchpack fitted... Now to move onto trimming the main dash pad.

Have had to remake my dash backing as I realised I want a OIL Pressure and water temperature Gauge and the acewell does not do that. And it was very fragile above the collumn.

So I have recut a new backing, reshaped it slightly and cut in 3 holes for 52mm Guages.

I was constructing a lower brace when our 8yr old also sugested using it to carry the wiring back to the scuttle.. What a Super Idea.. BIG credit to Toby on that one.

Hopefully the LED rear fog/rev should arrive today or tomorrow.

Making some slow progress on the dash wiring but getting there.

Not sure what to do next after the dash wiring, the garage is a tip again as I am in the process of stripping the engine out of my XR4x4 and getting the original no turbo ready to go in ( and trial fitting a Jaguar AJV6 as a point of interest....) so there's engines and parts of everything everywhere.....

nice dash what switches are they ?

Durite modular ones, I got mine from SVC . Come with their own multiplugs so they are fairly neat. I made the infill panel separate so that I can change things easily.

I'm swaying to getting black wings now after seeing your build. Do you have any photos of the whole car to see what it looks like.

Not presently,

It seems difficult to get a shot of it in the garage...

Will try and give it a go for you tomorrow.

Black wings on a different colour body looks good (IMO)
Heres (http://m.flickr.com/photos/serieslandy/6990706623/lightbox/) a shot of mine, although its blue not yellow!

My seats match too,

Black with yellow piping.

Sorting the colour scheme was an early task in 2010. My eldest ( now 9 nearly ) wanted blue and red ( bit like the Gulf cars ) but since it was my money I won.

Where did you get your lights from and I guess they are LED?

Bolt-on-bits.

the stop/tail/indicator are fillament. The rev/fog were originally fillament but the fog was not "F" Marked so they swapped them for the LED ones.

Almost no progress this month due to

1) Having to be tight with the pennies.
2) Being on holiday
3) Taking up Cycling
4) Doing some work on the XR4x4
5) Garage being a mess..
6) RSI's in my wrists
7) Not being bothered.

I did start on mounting the casing for my fuse box, which took some thought and swearing then striking luck with my thoughts and solving a few problems in one go. The reality at the moment is that I can't be bothered to finish the dash wiring which realy is the step that needs finishing before moving on.

Trying to sell some bits and bobs from my garage spares to make some funds but they will probably go elsewhere anyway!

I know how you feel rob, I had been hoarding stuff for years and thought sod it the space is worth more to me than the shite I have gathered. Living on a farm means you gather more things than perhaps you should so I had a mass sort out. 180 tons of old tractors, machines, engines and vehicles went to the scrap yard over the period of a month:o Upside is it has given me space for my toys and a man cave to be proud of. happy days.

Garage is now tidy, and one sill on the XR4x4 is now almost done. Too dark to cycle on an evening...

But it's getting cold!

Time to take a look at what to get on with.

Garage now untidy.

Change of plans on my wiring. I was going to build a bespoke fuse box and loom. But that was going to be £70-80+++

I was picking up a spare 2.9 V6 for the XR4x4 and the guy gave me the remains of the loom from the car. So the plan now is to do what I have advised most people not to do........

Fortunatly I already know sierra looms very well and can identify which sections are not needed quite easily. And I have the official diagrams.

I will cut out the junk, and then shorten the runs that are needed adding in multiplugs at the fuse box so that it can be removed easily, it's one thing that many sierra owners curse ford for being cheap when designing the fues box.

I was going to make an original loom just using the Sierra fuse box, but ended up basically replicating the Sierra layout of the fuses and relays for the things that remained. This way the fuse ratings and wire gauges are right everywhere, and most of the crimped connections inside could remain. It's not a bad option if you don't find the Sierra fuse box fugly. The Sierra wiring is relatively pedestrian (I had a 1993 Mondeo loom to break apart, too, that was way more complex), but you get a couple of spare relays and fuses for stuff you might want to add (ECU, fuel pump, rad fan and such in my case).

Here's the diagram I pasted inside the fusebox lid. Maybe you'll find it any use.

Yeah it was one of the last of the simple cars. Now you get 2-3 fuesboxes.

Will have to sit on the dinign room floor unpicking the useless stuff.

Loom Slimmin has begun, only got as far as untapeing most of it.

It's not helped by being an XR4x4 loom as it has the extra wiring for the AWS and lamp failure. Fortunatly the official diagrams are a gr8 help there.

Once the chaff has gone the fuesebox will be re-terminated with multiplugs and the remaining loom sections fitted with matching plugs. This will make it pluggable for ease of removal.

I have spent about 5 hrs sitting on the dining room floor, with the loom, the oficial diagram, meter and snips.

All the Window, Mirror, CLM, Fuel Puta, AWS, Lamp Failure, Wiper, Washer, Front Fog, Dash Dimmer, Wiper Speed, Stereo, Fag Lighter, ABS Feed, Interior Lighting, And other assorted crap has been cut out.

Some wires are awaiting re-joining especialy for the removal of the lamp failure module. The loom I had was also missing the loom from the A-Pillar back so that will need making up.

Next stage is to split down the sections and terminate on multiplugs to make the loom PLUGGABLE.

Dragged the loom out of the corner of the dining room and started to refresh my memory as to where I got to. Got as far as Identifying some of the branches and the labels on the floor no longer on the wires  .

Then went out and fitted the fues box to it's mount.

So only 10 months of inactivity :)

Would be nice but Every penny counts at the moment, Changed my daily driver in august to try and save cost. But the previous owner of my BMW 530D neglected a few major issues that so far have cost me £1K and I calculate another £250 to just fix all the things that were wrong. And the wifes car has cost near £800 to all in just 3 months.

My freind brought round his MX5 1800 track car the other day and it gave me a glimmer of inspiration again, same day I took the BMW from Brough, Over middleton in teesdale and down to Hexham via Alsoton. The BMW was fantastic at covering the distance so long as the bends were not tight!

So I will just continue with the Sierra loom, got to go into work tonight though having been there all day already ... So not tiring my brian this evening.

I have started to design my fuse box PCB, I have been doing a lot of PCB designs recently and learned a lot.

I need to order a new Fog switch and work out the new rules.

The garage should be tidy as I have sold a lot of sierra parts, but it looks no different!

Time to have another stab at tidying it up so i have some space...

Bit late on this news I guess, but Sadly sold the car in 2022? A guy and his sone were going to do it as a project together. I don't know how they got on.

Did not get back anywhere near my investment but that's no surprise.

Next installment in 7 Life looks to be a SVA'd Robin Hood :)
