Went out to get Takeaway last night, Came back and the wife was just putting the neighbours strimmer back ( for some reason she could not get the line feed to work on our £7 homebase special ) and she rolled up the extension lead as I took the Tea ( Singapore Chowmein with chips for me + splash of Sweet and sour sauce ) inside and got plates out.

Anyway I later went out and finished spraying my wishbones in the garage and shut up shop around 9ish..

Nothing odd your thingking,

Nope the neighbour does not mind us using garden tools, nor was there an issue with the extension lead. I did point out the extending real bolted to the roof but not a problem. Nor was the grass cutting bad ( the grass is crap anyway ).

So

I get up this morning, alls fine get the boys ready. Open the eldest curtains and look out on the back garden. The pond.

There apears to be at least one or two fish basking on the surface, it was already quite warm at 8AM but a little odd. So I goes out and finds one fish on it's side gasping, one other fish just floating and lots of other fish near the surface gasping a bit. fountain and waterfall are not running.

1st assumption was that the lower pond had run dry, but the pump was not even making a noise and the fountain is separate. So the power must be of to the distribution panel. Had She tripped the power????

NO she had unplugged the S....ing extension power that runs to the pond!!!

I restored that sharpish, then got the hosepipe and fired that into the water too to create as much bubbles as I could.

I then fished out a £70 And £20 Orfe, bagged them and binned them.. Thankfully that seems to be the only two casualties, my £150 Ghostie seems to have recoverd from his ordeal lying on his side. It took a couple of hours for him to act normaly though.

I ran the Hose for about 50 minuets, I later found a lift pump on a shelf and that made gr8 turbulance so that's been left there for the time being..

So, Mow your own lawns or mark up IMPORTANT plugs!

Weather is cooler so should help oxygenation.

slightly off the thread subject of the well being of TT,s pond fish ( I keep tropical fish in a 130 ltr tank indoors ).....

Anyways.........

whilst i worked on cruise ships, I did the maiden voyage of the most expensive cruise ship ever built at the time ( 1984 ), I was a bartender in the nightclub bar which was at the very top of the ship ( 16 decks above sea level),
During the night the swimming pools were always refilled with fresh water ready for the next morning.....long story short.....
The officer in charge had instructed an officer cadet ( like an apprentice ) to fill the pool outside the nightclub......he filled it alright  .....only he forgot to turn the tap off.......the water was overflowing for about an hour....ended up 16 decks below in the restaurant....thats 16 decks worth of very expensive carpet on all the staircases, on a ship that was less than 3 weeks old...........OOPS :D

Arrived in Miami a few days later where every carpet affected was replaced at a cost of tens of thousands of ££££££££,s....never saw that cadet again:D
The officer in charge did the job himself from then on.

cheers

I have to admit I actually did that on my Cold water tank years ago.

It's amazing how a little bit of water flow creates just enough oxygen.

The hot weather does not help.

I recon I have lost £150-£170 worth so far if I had to replace them with mature fish. I think todays 3 must have been badly stressed.

I have had some of these guys for 7-8 years, the big koi came as a 2" and lived in the tank for a few years. He's now probably 12" nose to tail. I would be gutted if I lost him to something so stupid.

simple option sell the fish. dig a hole in the liner like i did on my pond and no more fish to worry about.

Well I think it's 2 more today, I think they must either have been very badly stressed, The 02 Was Massivly low and still not recovered or there's a bug.

I really like having the fish, But if all the biggies go then I think I will downsize the pond. I am on holiday from Friday so will have to ask someone to drop ing and check for any more casualties.

Weird, when I was a kid, many moons ago, we had a pond about 8' x 4' teaming with fish of all types, frogs and even a newt or 2 it was only about 18" deep at its deepest. We didn't have a filter or a pump or a fountain so the only things oxygenating the water were the plants (lillies and canadian pond weed). It was completely maintenance free apart from a general tidy up in the spring. Now all I see in aquatics shops are pumps, UV kits, filters etc. WHY???? what's changed in 30 years?

Marcus,

Welcome, although you have been a member longer than I!

Are you building?:D

Hi, I've already built 2 Locosts, and will be sticking there. I've been a long time lurker here, more active on Locostbuilders tbh, but some good info and contacts here. If you have Chris's book, the 2 we built are on page 8 (ish), mines the black one :)

Marcus,

Oh yes, just had a look, very tidy.:D

Do you still have it/them?

Marcus

Yup, we've still got them, although mine hasn't turned a wheel for nearly 2 years :( . I've got an Alfa with an engine issue blocking my garage doors, so until that goes, the Locost stays there...
BTW both cars were done 'on the cheap'. the burgundy one was less than 2k on the road, mine was 2.5k all in (bought some proper shocks and tyres). Mine's been to the South of France too....that was an experience :)

Oh I can’t wait for a trip like that.
