front frame

hi all I'm having a bit of trouble with the front frame i have mocked it up but just carnt get it right

I'm unsure on what angles i need to join FF2/3 to FF1/4 i have studied the book but i just carnt get my head round it any help would be great

Hi Andy,

start with a length of box tube 38cm long ( yes this is over long)
make sure both ends are cut at 90 degree straight cut....
from the right hand end mark a scribe line 290mm along to the left,
then
scribe this line all around the box tube
then
scribe another line 69.5mm further to the left
then cut a 26degree angle at the end of the steel that you started the first measurement from,
once thats done,
turn the box tube 1 flat over away from you,
the scribe a 14degree line
turn the tube over by 2 flats,
scribe another 14degree line,
then
turn the tube back 1 flat & join the 2 scribe lines,
this is the base compound mitre cut,
place into a vice & cut each scribed line, turn the tube in the vice to cut each line,
then
scribe out a 13degree angle on either side of the 290mm scribe following the diagram in the book ( sorry , i don,t have the book with me at mo, so can,t give the page number but its the cutting list diagram in rear of the book)
scribe the 13 degree on opposite sides of the tube then join these scribe lines together on the flat in between them,
place in a vice & cut these scribe lines, turning the tube to do the opposite side,
once that is cut, make sure the cut faces are clean then bend the tube so it closes the tube together,
then using the jig as per book scribe & cut the 14 degree cut at the top scribed line which is 69.5 mm from the "notch" you,ve just cut.
you will then lose the extra length from the 38cm( this just helps set up the measurements without running out of steel ;) )

The other FF part is just the same but in opposite hand.

by the way....make sure your jig for the front frame is spot on as per book spec.

having given it a little more thought ....

the angles of the front frame are thus...

1) a compound mitre of 26/14 degree at each base of FF2 / FF3

2) a 26degree "notch"(13 degree either side of scribe line) 290mm from tip of base.

3) a 14 degree single cut at the top(69.5mm above the scribe line of the "notch")

Several years ago there was a front frame construction guide on this forum done by chris gibbs himself, however it seems to have disapeared :confused:

I've got it saved as a word doc on my laptop however so if you PM me your email I can send it over to you. I had problems with the front frame too but after reading this guide it all made sense!

The guide is still on the forum, its in the "Announcements " section as a "sticky" , 2nd thread on the first page titled "Book amendments & extra guides",
the drawings in this guide really do help to get your head around the angles to cut :)

Yes, this can be a little confusing, as the way the front frame jig is positioned , its almost like a negative of a photogragh in the way the "brain" tries to see the layout :eek:

BUT

If you make your front frame jig, then place FF1 & FF4 into position, then cut both compound angles (26/14 degree,s) on both FF2 & FF3 (opposite handed) then offer each part upto the jig, it,ll make it easier "to see" how each 26degree notch is facing, then once they are both done, bend the tube at the notch point then cut the 14degree cut at the top.

If you get really stuck, i,ll cut FF2 & FF3 for you & post them to you ;) ( not trying to hard sell you anything, just trying to help :) )
