hi everyone im new here, im from Christchurch New Zealand.
Have decided to build a Haynes Roadster.
I hope that this forum will be a great help for me.
I think the biggest problem i will have is locating the Haynes Book.
also will be what suitable driveline i will use? as the ford sierra wasnt sold in great numbers over here in Kiwiland.
But we do have a over populated number of jappa cars here so will have to adapt a RWD jappa diff etc...

Hi and welcome to this forum, there are a few kiwis lurking about here, a valuable site for construction information, as for locating the book try this link,http://www.fishpond.co.nz/advanced_search_result.php?rid=269411247&cPath=&keywords=build+your+own+sports+car may be helpfull. Another usefull site is this kiwi one http://www.lotus7.co.nz/forum/ ,seems to be quite a number of guys in the Christchurch area. Sometimes Sierra's come up on Trademe so worth having a look there. For my build Im using sierra diff axles and hubs, and steering column, 4age 20valve Black top with T50 box,mk3 cortina front uprights hubs and stubs. Good luck with build.Cheers Brendan.

ive just been on the phone to the cert and have been told that my front A arms have to be tig welded and crack tested if i make them myself..
think ill buy mine thru a company here in Christchurch, less hassle as i get a slip of paper saying they can be used legally in New Zealand:)

Hello and welcome to the forum,

just in the process of making body parts for 2 other New Zealand builders so the Haynes is getting quite popular out there. I wouldn't put their names on here just in case but i'm sure they wouldn't mind me passing their e-mail onto you if you would like to get in touch and compare notes as they are now on the closing stages of their build.

All the Best...AndyH

Apologies, just seen Allterain's post, seems there are more than i thought.....Regards....AndyH

well today is the day i start "project Roadstar"
I have finally tracked down a copy of the haynes book thru a local bookshop.
Pay for it today pick up Tuesday, at present time I have been using a copy from the Libary.
I have sorted out a certifcation guy to overlook the project, just awaiting approval from them for final go ahead. But have been told by him to start as the chassis is so commom that it will be ok.
Pick up my steel on Monday from work ( boss said he will give me it as hes keen to see how it goes ):D I work in a fully equip engineering workshop, but will be building the car at home as i have most gear also at home.
Been looking for a sierra sw for parts but at moment no luck!!!, will have to look at different ideas.
I did look at a ford mondao with a zetec motor, but its front wheel drive do anyone know of a g/box that will fit to it to make it a rear whell drive?.

We have a guy on the FSOC from NZ ... your rules are stricter than a headmistress in a boarding school... Good look..

yes our rules are very tough to get cert, but in someways at least you know in your own mind that the car you are driving is safe.

I have also been looking at japper motors a list of the ones im interested in is

toyota 4Age
nissan SR20turbo
mitsubishi 4G63 turbo

i can make gearbox adapter plates to suit rearwheel gearboxs

diff unit ill be using will be out of a nissian skyline cheaps as here and plentyfull:)

type 9.

Cortina mk4/5
Capri mk3
Sierra mk all
Granada mk2/mk3

And a few others.

thanks for the info
we have plenty of cortinas here in wrecking yards
so will try to use as much of the cortina as poss
with the book measurements does the lower front A arm suit the cortina front uprights, or do I have to lenghten or shorten them as i can get MK3 cortina up rights cheap as here about $50pr with brakes.

you wont be able to use much off the Tina, they have solid rear axles not independant suspension like the sierra.

your best alternative is an e30/e36 BMW as there are a few people building already.

Sierras are getting expensive here, it can be cheaper to get a BMW newer and in better condition

question??? im in the mood to make some parts for my car, but wont be the chassis,as im short on garage space ( too many toys ).
So im looking at starting the front and rear arms, front chassis frame and anything else i can make
Its been a long time waiting to get this project up and running ( 8months)
so im sure ill be asking heaps of question:D
1st is ... is it safe to build the arms without the chassis made, what order do most people build their cars

Yes, the wishbones can be done before the chassis. As long as your jig is accurate then you should be fine. Make sure the rears are to the revised length.

Front frame needs to be done on a jig and can also be done before the chassis.
