Hi all, been down to one of the local breakers yards this afternoon where I found a D.O.H.C. in J-reg sierra, they want £230 for the engine, gearbox and back axel, all removed redy for collection. Any thoughts on this as a price

Thanks

It's not really Arfon but then people are getting wise that we need these cars and there aren't too many about. If its been scrapped also it means you won't get your age related plate either, if you're that bothered about it. Scrapyards won't let you remove parts yourself now either, H&S bull - but the new government's going to sort that one out

You could try and haggle for the full donor bits you need ie, brakes, front uprights, master cylinder, loom, handbrake, prop, header tank, exhaust manifold and i'm sure somebody else with add. Then again they are bound to want more money for it.

Good Luck...AndyH

Depends on mileage condition etc

Dont suppose it seems too bad if you really havnt got space to strip a donor, remember you will want the master cylinder, wiring loom, front uprights, front calipers and the steering column too though

Buying from different sources costs more and also rules out an age related plate

If you have the space i would recommend waiting for a suitable donor and getting everything you need in one go :)

Some people buy complete running cars for that sort of money

Spud beat me to it!

I'm quite lucky in the fact that we have a few breakers yards local so maybe I could try and play one off against the other. Will gain some room tomorrow for a donor car as once the escort passes the MOT a neighbour wants to buy it so freing up some room and cash

Do a search for UPULLIT they let you buy a car from them, they have to remove the engine and gearbox for you, then you have 7 hours to remove everything else you want.

£230 for engine gearbox and axle doesn't sound too extreme to me, especially if they remove it for you. A half decent second hand engine is going to set you back a ton at least, gearbox similar so I'd say you're getting the axle cheap. Don't forget the breakers are there to make money. I've just lashed out £330 for two gearboxes and a second hand clutch for my build and I've got to build a hybrid out of the two boxes. To put that into perspective I only paid £361 for my donor car which still had 8 months MOT on it.

My whole J-reg DOHC donor cost £275 but I do have to store it and remove all the bits myself. As Mark said, you will also need other parts too.

I'm a tight fisted git so wouldn't want to pay that knowing I still need more bits and that a whole car doesn't cost much more :p

I was also able to see and hear it running so I know the engine works.

I got an offer from a new company that recycles cars as an education project,

£475 delivered for a project pack, ie: engine/box/loom/hubs/axle/steering column/master cylinder/ and any switchgear I want from their box of tricks.

all cleaned.

This may be the way I have to go as I have no where to strip a donor :(

Hmmm... that company sounds like the same one that i got mine from.

I paid less than that, got everything but the engine for £265

I have two local breakers that you can wander round and take off what you need, there is no H&S LAW as far as I know but the breakers are takign a bit of a risk letting you in.

So it doesnt' sound to bad a deal realy, will have to ponder on it a bit, don't think I would be able to shoehorn the Terrano engine in, might be a bit of a tight fit
